Carousel
Death in June Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She came to me
Whilst times were low
And smiled at me
Through eyes of stone
We danced and laughed
It's all so cold
Like wingless insects
Born to crawl

We climbed in vain
Destined to fall
Into graves
A broken soul
Now nothing's left
Except my hate
Oh which I leave
To one and all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Death in June's song Carousel are quite captivating with a melancholic tone. The story revolves around a person who is going through a difficult time and someone comes along to offer comfort. The singer describes this person as having eyes of stone, which could mean that her face betrayed no emotion. Despite the difficult time, they were able to dance and laugh. However, there is an underlying sense of coldness and sadness in their interactions, perhaps due to a feeling of hopelessness or inevitability of their situation.

As the song progresses, the singer talks about climbing in vain and being destined to fall into graves. The imagery suggests that despite their best efforts, they were unable to overcome their struggles and ultimately ended up broken. The line "Now nothing's left except my hate, which I leave to one and all" suggests that the singer has given up and is filled with bitterness towards the world. It's not clear if this sentiment is directed towards the person who offered comfort or towards society as a whole. The repetition of the word "carousel" in the chorus adds to the sense of futility and repetition, which is a recurring theme throughout the song.
