This is the first time that I heard this version! It's different from the Neville Brother's Band album, "Fiyo on the Byou" Thanks for sharing this! I was raised listening to this music and it really inspires me. I sing along all of the time! NOLA is a magical place!

Except for the fact that the song isn't ON the Chef soundtrack. Nope. It's in the movie though. I just turned the movie on for the first time 15 minutes ago, and immediately recognized the Indian style right off of the bat. I had no idea what the tune was from. It's from the "Our New Orleans" benefit 2005. I wonder why the Magnolias let them use the song for the movie, but not the OST. Perhaps it's because that version of the tune is on a compilation of various artists.

I was only introduced the the entire style from the HBO series Treme, and so far I've only heard the Donald Harrison album. I need to brush up on my Magnolias.

John, as a Cajun living in New Orleans, trust me that this is not a Cajun song in any way. The Mardi Gras Indians are a cultural icon of NOLA's African American neighborhoods. The story of their history is fascinating and totally worth a read. If you want to see some contemporary Cajun music for contrast I suggest looking up Lost Bayou Ramblers. Cajun, Creole, Mardi Gras Indian, Bounce, Brass Band...all come from this area, but they are each very unique and independent styles.

At one time, blacks were not permitted to march. Not sure when that policy was scrapped. Methinks the Indian get-up was a joke, fooling no one. They are prominent local black musicians whom everyone knew

Ostensibly, the Indian garb was/is a homage to the original native tribes whom escaped slaves sometimes found refuge among. That's the traditional explanation for it, anyway; the costumes became more and more elaborate over time for what we call "one-upsmanship" among the various groups.

This is NOT and NO WHERE NEAR Cajun music! The Marid Gras Idians are a whole diferent culture, they are a really interesting bunch of people and they have deep deep roots down there in new orleans. They are from the black communities mostly 9th ward, Big Chief Jolly was feom out in the 3rd ward caliope projects. The 7th ward Creole people are a whole diferent breed. All this great music makes up this sweel ole' cresent city! NOLA TILL I DIE!!!!!
