Let It Be
John Denver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness, she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Overall Meaning

The Beatles' "Let It Be" is known to be one of the most iconic songs in the world. John Denver's version of this song creates a different interpretation than the original, but it still carries the same meaning. The first verse speaks about Mother Mary, who could either be a reference to the biblical Mary or Paul McCartney's own mother, whose name was also Mary. She supports the singer during troubled times by speaking "words of wisdom", or inciting him to let things be.

The next verse talks about how people who are broken-hearted can still find hope, "For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see/There will be an answer, let it be". Denver's voice reflects the hope and optimism in this verse, expressing the belief that even when everything seems to be falling apart, people still have a chance to find what they're looking for. The final verse brings everything back around to the idea of Mother Mary, and how she brings music and light into the singer's life.

Hey J Parker, Sorry to hear you're having these issues. Would you mind please emailing our support team an example album or track to support [at] sonichits.com?

SonicHits just gets worse and worse. Albums that don't play, songs that don't play, tracks that are NOT the named song or even the right artist, adverts that cover content and cause the site to interrupt and buffer inthe middle of songs. I've got to find a better music site!
