Feel Like Rain
Motion City Soundtrack Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When the words all sound the same,
In the lifeless corners of this empty frame.
Though we feel let down,
By the same old autumn breathing.
Winter's curse is just around the bend.
With our hands all tied,
To the blades of their design.
We are armed and ready to commit this crime.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long.
From the falsest smile,
To the fear of death is why
The pain reminds us that we're still alive.
With our hopes on hold,
And our lack of interest exposed,
All hands damage our determined eyes.
But the lines are drawn,
And the red begins to creep
Its way from boredom toward apathy.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long.
Say something, finally we're alone.
Alright is there anyone out there at all?
Say something finally we're alone.
How about a phone call now?
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are,
The way we've been for far too long.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are,
The way we've been for far too long.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
And we feel like rain,
When the words all sound the same.
As the curtain closes on another day
In "Feel Like Rain," Motion City Soundtrack seems to be expressing the sentiment of feeling stuck in a rut. The repetition of words "we love that game but we never play" reveals a desire for change but a fear of failure or the unknown. The lyrics suggest a certain sense of monotony, as the words all sound the same and hands are tied to the blades of their design. The line "the lifeless corners of this empty frame" further emphasizes this feeling of emptiness or lack of purpose. Despite feeling let down by the same old autumn breathing and winter's cursed presence, they are armed and ready to commit this crime, perhaps indicating a desire for rebellion or breaking out of the mundane.
Throughout the song, there is a tension between holding onto the familiar and craving something new. The falsest smile and lack of interest exposes all hands and damage the determined eyes. The pain reminds them that they're still alive, but the lines are drawn and the red begins to creep its way from boredom toward apathy. The final lines "say something, finally we're alone" and "how about a phone call now" suggest a longing for connection and a desire for someone to reach out to them.
Overall, "Feel Like Rain" expresses a feeling of being tired of the same routine and wanting something new, but being too afraid to make a change. The repetition of lyrics and melancholy tone further emphasize this sense of monotony and frustration.

And we feel like rain
We feel down and uninspired, like the rain that falls on a gloomy day
When the words all sound the same
When everything feels repetitive and ordinary
In the lifeless corners of this empty frame
In the dull and uninspiring aspects of our lives
Though we feel let down
We feel disappointed by our situation
By the same old autumn breathing
By the familiar and recurring feeling of autumn
Winter's curse is just around the bend
Things are about to get worse, and we can feel it coming
With our hands all tied
Feeling powerless to change our circumstances
To the blades of their design
To the forces that shape our lives, beyond our control
We are armed and ready to commit this crime
We are prepared to rebel against our situation, even if it means breaking the rules
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long
We are afraid of change and of losing what we have, no matter how unfulfilling it may be
From the falsest smile
From the insincere and fake expressions of happiness
To the fear of death is why
The dread of mortality is a reason for our anxiety
The pain reminds us that we're still alive
The suffering we experience is a reminder that we are still existing
With our hopes on hold
With our aspirations and dreams unfulfilled
And our lack of interest exposed
Our lack of motivation and enthusiasm is evident
All hands damage our determined eyes
Our persistence and drive is wearing thin
But the lines are drawn
Our situation has become clear and defined
And the red begins to creep
The sense of danger and urgency is growing
Its way from boredom toward apathy
The feeling of boredom is leading to an even deeper sense of indifference
Say something, finally we're alone
We want someone to speak up and break the silence, now that we are isolated
Alright is there anyone out there at all?
Is there anyone who can empathize or help us in our situation?
How about a phone call now?
We long for any form of communication, no matter how small

I’m pretty young compared to most MCS fans. My band teacher introduced me to them freshman year of hs. I’m now 19 and gosh every time I listen to this song I cry my eyes out. So thankful I got to see them live for the anniversary tour of this album last year. It was even more amazing because I’m from MN like they are.

This was my soundtrack of my youth, glad that others like it. I think what sets them apart is the lyrics, not.many bands are as articulate.
