The Night We Met
Lord Huron Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am not the only traveler
Who has not repaid his debt
I've been searching for a trail to follow again
Take me back to the night we met

And then I can tell myself
What the hell I'm supposed to do
And then I can tell myself
Not to ride along with you

I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Oh, take me back to the night we met

When the night was full of terrors
And your eyes were filled with tears
When you had not touched me yet
Oh, take me back to the night we met

I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Take me back to the night we met

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Lord Huron's song The Night We Met express a sentiment that many people can relate to – that of feeling like you owe a debt that you cannot repay. The singer acknowledges that he is not alone in this feeling, but that he has been searching for a path that he can follow. He longs to go back to the night he met the person he is singing to, as if that is where everything began to unravel.

The chorus of the song speaks to the confusion and heartbreak that can arise in a relationship that has gone wrong. The singer is grappling with what he is supposed to do, and is haunted by the memory of the person he lost. He is desperate to go back to that moment when things were still good, when there was still hope for the two of them.

The second verse of the song paints a picture of a scary and uncertain time, when the night was filled with terrors and the person he loves was crying. Yet even in this moment of darkness, the singer longs for the past, for the night they met. He cannot let go of the memory of what they once had, and he continues to be haunted by the ghost of the person he loved.

Overall, The Night We Met is a powerful and poignant exploration of loss, regret, and the longing to return to a moment in time when everything was still possible.

Everytime i listen to this song, I’m reminded of 2 things.

1. The lost love - It’s soothing to reminisce on what will never be while it also tells me life is only going to be good and get better as long as you’re working on yourself constantly and consistently irrespective of the obstacles.

2. My father - Especially the line ‘I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you’
Clearly telling me I had all of my dad in early childhood - had most of him during the teenage while i was embracing my teenage - some of him in my early 20s and none of him when he passed in my late twenties when I was becoming my own being.

Out of nowhere strikes me like a thunderbolt from an empty clear blue sky.
