Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers were a New York doo wop group consisting of Joe Negroni, Herman Santiago, Jimmy Merchant, and Sherman Garnes, but centered around the extraordinary talents of their lead singer, (in 1955, 13-year-old) Frankie Lymon (Franklin Joseph Lymon, September 30, 1942 – February 27, 1968).
Lymon was credited with their first big hit, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, though in the early '90s, a federal judge ruled after a lengthy trial that Lymon hadn't written "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" -- another member of the Teenagers had. Nevertheless, his wise-beyond-his-years vocal and performing abilities not only made the Teenagers a group several notches above the competition but made Lymon the first black teenage pop star. Though only together for a brief 18-month period, Lymon & the Teenagers exerted an enormous influence, spawning several "kid" vocal groups and providing initial inspiration to Berry Gordy to model his entire Motown production approach around Lymon's original vocal style. Inexplicably, the group split into two fractions at the height of their success, and neither had a hit again. Lymon died from a drug overdose at age 26. Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Len Barry, and his principal protégé, Michael Jackson (whose early recordings with the Jackson 5 are virtual re-creations of the early Lymon sound, merely updated) all show the influence of Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' groundbreaking work.

Why Do Fools Fall in Love
Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers Lyrics
Oh wah, oh wah, oh wah, oh wah, oh wah, oh wah
Why do fools fall in love?
Why do birds sing so gay?
And lovers await the break of day
Why do they fall in love?
Why does the rain fall from above?
Why do fools fall in love?
Why do they fall in love?
Love is a losing game
Love can a be shame
I know of a fool
You see
For that fool is me
Tell me why, why, why
Tell me why
Why do birds sing so gay?
And lovers await the break of day?
Why do they fall in love?
Why does my heart skip a crazy beat?
Before I know it will reach defeat!
Tell me why, why, why
Why do fools fall in love?

Lymon was a backup singer for The Premiere [a.k.a The Teenagers]. They were rehearsing in the hallway of an apartment building when a resident gave them a collection of love letters from his girlfriend. They read the all and chose "Why Do Birds Sing So Gay" and made the song.(Now this is where the confusion starts ,for me personally, because I read that he wrote the song himself and while he would hang out with the teenagers they would change here and there.)
At the audition, Lymon filled in at the lead for H.Santiago, who was sick at the time. Goldner liked the song, but not all of its lyrics and changed some of it (with that being said Goldner use to give himself credit for writing the lyrics (for other artists aswell) knowing damn well that he had nothing to do with it, and higher shares in royalties and rights to their song (which only him and lymon share), basically he would give himself credit for literally everything).
Now these boys had very little knowledge about law or the music industry, having record companies claiming a share of the copyright on the songs written by them [lymon and the teenagers]. Later on they realised they were being cheated.
Like I said earlier Goldner would credit himself, by that being said he told the teenagers only two names could be listed on the copyright [his and lymon's]
Well 2 members of the group sued Goldner, and nothing came about since he threatened to kill them if they tried to get it.
Not just Lymon but the others [teenagers] were used aswell. I mean they had no right direction nor guidence what so ever, plus being young and black in the music industry. Tragic, tragic & tragic .
At the end of the day, there are many stories claiming this & that. The truth is we'll never truly know what really happened back then. So arguing about it is just silly and pointless.

Back when you actually had to have talent to make it in the music industry ❤️. I love this
SpaceJamDreazi
There's plenty of talent now. Also back then you had people who weren't even writing songs and lip synching too. It's s myth thinking everyone back then had talent they didn't.

Thank you, though, for your kind reply.
The biggest difference between present day (80s, 90s to now) that BOTHERS me is that ppl no longer exhibit good manners; lots of brainless rudeness for no apparent reason.
The best change, imo, is easy availability to information about ANYTHING. Thanks 4 asking. 🙋
