Sensorium
Epica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chance doesn't exist
But the path of life is not totally so predestined
And time and chronology show us how all should be
In the ways of existence
To find out why we are here

Being conscious is a torment
The more we learn is the less we get

No one surveys the whole, focus on things so small
But life's objective is to make it meaningful
Only searching for this
That which doesn't exist
Although our ability to relativize remains unclear

Being conscious is a torment
The more we learn is the less we get
Every answer contains a new quest
A quest to non existence, a journey with no end

I'm not afraid to die
I'm afraid to be alive without being aware of it

I'm so afraid to, I couldn't stand to
Waste all my energy on things
That do not matter anymore

Our future has already been written by us alone
But we don't grasp the meaning of
Our programmed course of life
We only fear what comes, and smell death every day
Our future has already been wasted by us alone
And we just let it happen and do not worry at all

Our future has already been written by us alone
But we don't grasp the meaning of
Our programmed course of life
We only fear what comes, and smell death every day
Search for the answers that lie beyond

Being conscious is a torment
The more we learn is the less we get
Every answer contains a new quest
A quest to non existence, a journey with no end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Epica's "Sensorium" explore the philosophy of existence and the pursuit of knowledge in life. The first few lines of the song suggest that chance is not a factor in life, although the path we take is not entirely predetermined. Instead, life follows a fixed chronology, and it is up to us to discover why we are here. The lyrics point out that being conscious is a painful experience since the more we learn, the less we understand.

The song addresses the idea that we always concentrate on things we believe are important while neglecting the bigger picture of life. Our search for meaning is never-ending, and despite our ability to put things in perspective, we remain confused about our existence. Additionally, the lyrics reflect on the fear of death and the fear of being oblivious to life. The song raises questions about the meaning of existence and whether we can ever truly understand our programmed course in life.

Additionally, the song implies that we have already written our destiny but do not comprehend the significance of our path in life. We fear our inevitable death and fail to appreciate our time and efforts, wasting our future instead of making it count. The song concludes on a positive note, urging us to continue striving for answers that go beyond our limited understanding, even if it means embarking on a never-ending journey of self-discovery.

What I find most surprising about Epica is how they don't sound like anyone else. Too many symphonic metal bands are carbon copies of Nightwish. Epica is their own genre.

exactly

Caleb Steele

@T Simons Actually, most symphonic bands don't sound like Nightwish. There aren't many symphonic metal bands, and most of the "symphonic" metal bands out there just sound like pop music with some "heavy" guitars, along with some keys and a couple of violins chucked in the mix. Epica and Nightwish are very unique.

Clare Meinhardt

They sounded more like Nightwish in their first few albums (certainly Simone sang much more like Tarja than she came to and does now), but I agree with @Caleb Steele that Nightwish and Epica are standout among their peers.
