In my interpretation, the singer is insecure about himself, and he wants to impress his love interest. He wants to be seen as someone who is trying to change his life even though he may not have much to say. Through the lyrics, he wants to show that he's genuine and not fake like some people may think. The singer knows the risk of being rejected, but he refuses to give up on proving he's worth her attention.
