English Rose
The Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No matter where I roam
I will return to my English rose
For no bonds can ever tempt me from she
I've sailed the seven seas
Flown the whole blue sky
But I've returned with haste
To where my love does lie
No matter where I go
I will come back to my English rose
For nothing can ever tempt me from she
I've searched the secret mists
I've climbed the highest peaks
And caught the wild wind home
To hear her soft voice speak
No matter where I roam
I will return to my English rose
For no bonds can ever keep me from she

Been to ancient worlds (been to ancient worlds)
I've scoured the whole universe
And caught the first train home
To be at her side
No matter where I roam
I will return to my English rose
For no bonds can ever keep me from she

Line by Line Meaning

No matter where I roam
Even if I travel far and wide,

I will return to my English rose
I will always come back to my beloved in England,

For no bonds can ever tempt me from she
No matter what enticements come my way, I will never be swayed from her.

I've sailed the seven seas
I have navigated across all the oceans,

Flown the whole blue sky
And soared through the vast expanse of the skies,

But I've returned with haste
But I have come back as fast as I could,

To where my love does lie
To where my love resides.

I've searched the secret mists
I have explored the obscure and enigmatic places,

I've climbed the highest peaks
I have ascended to the summits of the tallest mountains,

And caught the wild wind home
And let the wind carry me back to her.

To hear her soft voice speak
To hear her gentle words.

Been to ancient worlds (been to ancient worlds)
I have traveled to the realms of ancient times (repeat),

I've scoured the whole universe
I have searched the vastness of the entire cosmos,

And caught the first train home
And jumped on the first ride back to her.

To be at her side
To be by her side always.

For no bonds can ever keep me from she
Because no matter what, my love for her will always prevail.

Anyone else think this is one of the greatest songs ever written, or is it just me?

@patrickdalton3174

@Taffy064

It's just you! But I have to admit that it's a bloody good song, and one that I have held in high esteem for many years.

@trevorford9432

It's great like most things weller was involved with,
It's very haunting if you sit back with your eyes closed and listen, not if your driving lol. ( still great after all these years ).

@brucefoord102

I am with you all the way.

@loxley9941

All the way, I would argue anyone to show me a better written song. Sure there’s debates but not much can touch this.

Just sums up The Jam for me. Three working class lads writing music about the things that matter. What a true genius Weller was, and still is. We need more bands like this nowadays; bands with a bit of grit and passion. Long live The Jam.
