Zebra
The John Butler Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could be loud man, I could be silent
I could be young man or I could be old
I could be a gentleman, I could be violent
I could turn hot man or I could be cold
I could be just like the calm before the storm boy,
Waiting for all hell yeah to break loose
I could be innocent or I could be guilty
Doesn't mean that I don't believe in no noose
So I'm singin'

I could be rich like a wandering Gypsy
I could be poor like a fat wallet lost
I could be first man or I could come last
It's not who breaks the ribbon boy it's how you get across
I could be red blue black and white sunset
Or darkest at day boy or brightest at night
I could be the sun boy I could be the moon
I'm made up from the stars boy I'm shining so bright

So I'm singin'

I could be asleep boy or I could be awake
I could be alive and I be the walking dead
I could be ignorant or I could be informed
I could lead my life man or I could be led
I could be anything I put my mind to boy
All I gotta do is give myself half a chance
I can bring love back into my life
And share it with the world if I got some balance

So I'm singin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The John Bulter Trio's song "Zebra" take on a reflective and introspective tone. They suggest that the singer is capable of embodying a wide range of characteristics and attitudes - he could be loud or silent, young or old, violent or gentle. The lyrics also suggest that the singer has a deep appreciation for balance, and is aware of the fact that he can choose to live his life in different ways. The idea of balance is repeated throughout the song, with the singer claiming that he can bring love back into his life and share it with others if he can find some balance.

Overall, "Zebra" seems to be a song about the many possibilities that exist within each person. It's a song about recognizing the different roles we can play in life, and the different paths we can take. The repeated refrain of "So I'm singin'" suggests that the singer is at peace with this idea, and is content to continue exploring and discovering new aspects of his own personality.

💚 This song will always be TIMELESS!

John Butler came to my high school (must've been 15 years ago now) because the vice principle had a personal connection to him... about 44 of us students were selected to come into the music room for him to have a chat strictly no performing 😖and he spoke about what great effort, and patience, and constant practice to perfect his art, that it it took to break out into the industry as an independent artist.
The way he spoke about music, and what it took to get where he was, is pretty much sumed up as patience, persistence, practice, and above all being humble. Staying true to who you are.

He spoke about how he came up with the tune of this song... he said he was in the shower humming ('ba da-ing') a combination of known and improvised tunes when 'ba da da da di dun, da da di dun, ba da da da di da di, da di dad di da do' the tune just emerged to the front of his mind and he raced out of the shower to write it down.

I remember him saying two things that helped him substancially to form a successful career:
1. Practice. How all through his teenage years he'd just be at home in his room playing his guitar for hours every single day.
2. He said you need to invest 80% of what you earn into your music. Living off bare minimum makes you appreciate life and what it offers you more, appreciate those around you more, it 'cleanses your soul when you never even realised it needed to be cleansed'

That was a pretty epic like 45mins of my teenage life... we got to go up to him at the end of his talk and say hi and shake his hand and we could strum his guitar if we wanted too... I remember my cheeks burning so bad and saying hi and just clenching the neck of his guitar with my left hand. I swear I didn't wash that hand for like a week!

He'll always live on as one of those great musicicans that had music flowing through his entire existence!
