Cygnet Committee
David Bowie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bless you madly,
Sadly as I tie my shoes
I love you badly,
Just in time, at times, I guess
Because of you I need to rest
Because it's you
That sets the test

So much has gone
And little is new
And as the sparrow sings
Dawn chorus for
Someone else to hear
The Thinker sits alone growing older
And so bitter

"I gave Them life
I gave Them all
They drained my very soul
...Dry
I crushed my heart
To ease their pains
No thought for me remains there
Nothing can they spare
What of me?
Who praised their efforts
To be free?
Words of strength and care
And sympathy
I opened doors
That would have blocked their way
I braved their cause to guide,
For little pay

I ravaged at my finance just for those
Those whose claims were steeped in peace, tranquility
Those who said a new world, new ways ever free
Those whose promises stretched in hope and grace for me"

I bless you madly,
Sadly as I tie my shoes
I love you badly, just in time,
At times, I guess
Because of you I need to rest, oh yes
Because it's you
That sets the test

So much has gone
And little is new
And as the sunrise stream
Flickers on me,
My friends talk
Of glory, untold dream, where all is God and God is just a word

"We had a friend, a talking man
Who spoke of many powers that he had
Not of the best of men, but ours

We used him
We let him use his powers
We let him fill our needs
Now we are strong

And the road is coming to its end
Now the damned have no time to make amends
No purse of token fortune stands in our way
The silent guns of love
Will blast the sky
We broke the ruptured structure built of age
Our weapons were the tongues of crying rage

Where money stood
We planted seeds of rebirth
And stabbed the backs of fathers
Sons of dirt

Infiltrated business cesspools
Hating through our sleeves
Yea, and we slit the Catholic throat
Stoned the poor
On slogans such as

'Wish You Could Hear'
'Love Is All We Need'
'Kick Out The Jams'
'Kick Out Your Mother'
'Cut Up Your Friend'
'Screw Up Your Brother or He'll Get You In the End'

And we know the flag of love is from above
And we can force you to be free
And we can force you to believe"

And I close my eyes and tighten up my brain
For I once read a book in which the lovers were slain
For they knew not the words of the Free States' refrain
It said:
"I believe in the power of good
I believe in the state of love
I will fight for the right to be right
I will kill for the good of the fight for the right to be right"

And I open my eyes to look around
And I see a child laid slain
On the ground
As a love machine lumbers through desolation rows
Plowing down man, woman, listening to its command
But not hearing anymore
Not hearing anymore
Just the shrieks from the old rich

And I want to believe
In the madness that calls 'Now'
And I want to believe
That a light's shining through
Somehow

And I want to believe
And you want to believe
And we want to believe
And we want to live
Oh, we want to live

We want to live
We want to live
We want to live
We want to live
We want to live

I want to live
I want to live
I want to live

I want to live
I want to live
I want to live

Live
Live
Live

Overall Meaning

In Cygnet Committee, David Bowie sings about the disillusionment and betrayal he felt towards the hippie counterculture movement of the late 60s, particularly those who he believed took advantage of the movement for personal gain. The lyrics express a deep sense of sadness and fatigue as Bowie ties his shoes and looks at the world around him. He sings about how much has gone and how little is new, mourning the promise of the movement and its failure to bring about meaningful change. Despite this, he acknowledges that he still loves the movement in his own way, and the chorus repeats the phrase "I bless you madly, I love you badly" - a bittersweet tribute to the hope and disappointment that defined his experience.

The second half of the song takes a darker turn, with Bowie singing as a member of a revolutionary group that has grown increasingly violent and extreme. He describes how they used a talking man's powers for their own gain, became infiltrated in business cesspools and even slit the Catholic throat. The lyrics end on a disturbing note, with Bowie imagining a love machine plowing down people in "desolation rows" and a child lying slain on the ground. Despite this, the song ends with a repeated plea to live and believe that things can be better.

Line by Line Meaning

I bless you madly, Sadly as I tie my shoes
I bless you with great passion and love, but at the same time, I am very sad and melancholic as I go about my routine tasks like tying my shoes.

I love you badly, Just in time, at times, I guess Because of you I need to rest Because it's you That sets the test
My love for you is intense and perhaps untimely but it is only because of you that I feel the need to take a break and rejuvenate as you are the one who constantly tests me.

So much has gone And little is new And as the sparrow sings Dawn chorus for Someone else to hear The Thinker sits alone growing older And so bitter
I feel like I have experienced a lot in life, but there is not much that is new anymore. As I listen to the sparrow singing, I feel bitter and alone, growing older in solitude like the statue of the Thinker.

"I gave Them life I gave Them all They drained my very soul ...Dry I crushed my heart To ease their pains No thought for me remains there Nothing can they spare What of me? Who praised their efforts To be free? Words of strength and care And sympathy I opened doors That would have blocked their way I braved their cause to guide, For little pay
I gave everything to the people I helped, but they took everything I had until I was completely drained. I sacrificed my own heart and wellbeing to help them ease their pains, but they never spared even a thought for me. Yet, I praised their efforts to find freedom and offered them my strength, care and compassion. I even opened doors that would have blocked their way and guided them for very little reward in return.

I ravaged at my finance just for those Those whose claims were steeped in peace, tranquility Those who said a new world, new ways ever free Those whose promises stretched in hope and grace for me"
I spent a lot of money and effort on noble causes that promised to bring peace and tranquility, and offered hope for a new world free from the shackles of the past. The promises of these causes uplifted and inspired me, and I was willing to do anything to support them.

So much has gone And little is new And as the sunrise stream Flickers on me, My friends talk Of glory, untold dream, where all is God and God is just a word
As I watch the sunrise and reflect on my life, my friends talk about an untold dream of glorified existence where all that exists is a higher power and the word of God.

"We had a friend, a talking man Who spoke of many powers that he had Not of the best of men, but ours We used him We let him use his powers We let him fill our needs Now we are strong
We had a friend who was a smooth talker and boasted of many powers, though he was not the best of men. Yet, we used him and let him use his powers to fulfill our own needs, and now we stand strong as a result.

"And the road is coming to its end Now the damned have no time to make amends No purse of token fortune stands in our way The silent guns of love Will blast the sky We broke the ruptured structure built of age Our weapons were the tongues of crying rage Where money stood We planted seeds of rebirth And stabbed the backs of fathers Sons of dirt Infiltrated business cesspools Hating through our sleeves Yea, and we slit the Catholic throat Stoned the poor On slogans such as 'Wish You Could Hear' 'Love Is All We Need' 'Kick Out The Jams' 'Kick Out Your Mother' 'Cut Up Your Friend' 'Screw Up Your Brother or He'll Get You In the End' And we know the flag of love is from above And we can force you to be free And we can force you to believe"
We have reached the end of the road, and the damned have no chance to make things right. We have cleared away any token obstacles that stood in our way, using the silent weapons of love. We destroyed the old structures, using the power of our rage, and planted seeds of new ideas where the old money and power structures used to be. We turned against our own fathers, whom we saw as part of the problem, as well as the poor and the Catholic Church. We justified our actions using slogans of freedom and love, all while claiming higher moral ground or divine intervention. We believed that we could force people to be free or to believe in our ideals.

And I close my eyes and tighten up my brain For I once read a book in which the lovers were slain For they knew not the words of the Free States' refrain It said: "I believe in the power of good I believe in the state of love I will fight for the right to be right I will kill for the good of the fight for the right to be right"
I close my eyes and brace myself in anticipation of the violence that comes with fighting for what we believe in. I recall a book where the lovers were killed because they did not know the words of the Free States' anthem, which speaks of the power of good, the state of love, the right to do right, and the importance of fighting for those rights even if it means killing for them.

And I open my eyes to look around And I see a child laid slain On the ground As a love machine lumbers through desolation rows Plowing down man, woman, listening to its command But not hearing anymore Not hearing anymore Just the shrieks from the old rich
I open my eyes and see the devastating effects of the loveless machines that rampage through the land, leaving dead bodies in their wake. They plow through entire neighborhoods, crushing man and woman under their feet, with no regard for life or love. The only sound is the shrieks of the old and wealthy who can afford to buy themselves some sense of safety in this anarchy.

And I want to believe In the madness that calls 'Now' And I want to believe That a light's shining through Somehow And I want to believe And you want to believe And we want to believe And we want to live Oh, we want to live We want to live We want to live We want to live We want to live We want to live I want to live I want to live I want to live I want to live I want to live I want to live Live Live Live
Despite all of the violence and chaos around me, I still want to believe in something greater and more hopeful. I want to believe that there is some sort of light shining through the darkness, even if it is just our own want to live.
