Mew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

From my boat I can see your house
And when the lights are off
I can watch you move
Hear the wind whispering your name

Twice the encouragement
Of the real you
Callie if you really want me to
I can always get you down

If you get the money for me
Callie in the summer rain
You will be kept dry you see
If you got the money for me

Making amends for distant wrong
Sincere
You can run away
Leave your books behind you

But you should look back twise
Just to be on the save side
From my boat I can see your house
But now the lights are off

And there is no one home
You are just like an avalanche
Cold as I might have guessed
But at least I'm covered up for now

In a big, big way
I am really small
I get off my feet
But I'm still distant

Don't you just love goodbyes?
Callie let us get it over with
I can always get you down
If you got the money for me

Callie in the summer rain
You will be kept dry you see
If you got the money for me
Most of our lives we try so hard

To find the time
I won't care for you
Like I'm really supposed to
There are things I'll do

That could really hurt you
Don't you just love goodbyes?

Overall Meaning

"156" by Mew is a song about longing, obsession, and unrequited love. The singer describes watching the person they love from a distance, seeing their house and even being able to watch them move around inside when the lights are off. They hear the wind whispering the person's name and express a desire to be with them, even if it means causing harm. The singer also mentions the exchange of money with the person, possibly indicating a transactional or unhealthy aspect to their relationship.

The lyrics hint at a sense of powerlessness and a lack of control on the part of the singer, who appears to be in love with someone who is unattainable. They attempt to make amends for past wrongs and fantasize about being with the person in the rain, but ultimately acknowledge that they are just "really small" in comparison. The song ends with a sense of resignation and acceptance of the fact that the person they love may never feel the same way.

So underrated. Discovered them on an mp3 blog in the mid 2000s during my teenage years... Really miss this sound and that time.

I had a dream last night about being on the 156th floor of a building. The power was out and I was trying to read the sign on the wall as I looked to the right of the hall I saw a creature like human running towards me like an animal would…. Right before I was devoured I woke up. I typed in 156 and this band showed up. Idk if it was fate or just by chance but I’m sad I haven’t heard them sooner. They need more credit for their work.

That unrelated dream leading to this video is 100% fate

I named my cat Callie after the girl in this song. When I took her to get chipped, the ID number on her tag was 156. Amazing coincidence. Spectacular moment. I nearly choked when I saw the tag. I love her as much as Jonas loves the Callie in this song.

@albarleta2511

She will bear a kitten and it will 'Mew".
