Brilliant Trees
David Sylvian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you come to me,
I'll question myself again;
Is this grip on life still my own?

When every step I take
Leads me so far away,
Every thought should bring me closer home.

And there you stand,
Making my life possible.
Raise my hands up to heaven,
But only you could know.

My whole world stands in front of me,
By the look in your eyes.
By the look in your eyes.
My whole life stretches in front of me,
Reaching up like a flower,
Leading my life back to the soil.

Every plan I've made's
Lost in the scheme of things.
Within each lesson lies the price to learn.

A reason to believe
Divorces itself from me;
Every hope I hold lies in my arms.

Overall Meaning

David Sylvian's song "Brilliant Trees" is a contemplative ballad that reflects on one's journey through life, love, and the passage of time. The lyrics depict a sense of uncertainty and struggle as the singer questions their grip on life, and wonders if their steps are leading them closer to or further away from their true home. The use of imagery of flowers and soil signify the cyclical nature of life, with the flowers reaching up to the sky before returning to the earth.

The chorus, "And there you stand, making my life possible," refers to the power of love and the impact it can have on an individual's life. The singer acknowledges that it is the love of another person that makes their life worth living, and their hands raised to heaven signify a sense of gratitude for that love. The repeated line "by the look in your eyes" suggests a deep emotional connection and a sense of being seen and understood by another person.

The second verse delves into the theme of personal growth and the price that must be paid to learn and progress. The uncertainty of the future is reflected in the line "Every plan I've made's lost in the scheme of things," and the hopefulness of the flower metaphor suggests that despite the challenges, there is the potential for beauty and growth.

Overall, "Brilliant Trees" is a poetic and introspective song that encourages the listener to reflect on the fleeting nature of life, the power of love, and the importance of personal growth and perseverance.

Specifically track 3 Christophe? Me too. A genius who didn't want any of it but did what he wanted. David Sylvian will be the music they play when the future discovers new worlds.

@@mexicanson Wow Ande - I have to say that both Davids might be flattered at being compared to one another . . . I hope. Bowie was, a genius and one of my demi-gods, but maybe because he was also the epitome of hedonistic futurism - everything man could be with a little effort, and a tad more talent. But Sylvian feels to me to have just followed a course that speaks to every fibre of my being - all the time, and every time. Appreciate I worked through many nights at varsity listening to Ziggie telling me to "keep at it", and then danced my ass off to Bowie and followed that narcissistic hedonistic rabbit hole for a while - and came out, I believe, bigger from it all. But Sylvian "sees the world with a heart that knows" (Every Clour You Are - Rain Tree Crow) and is thus my Jesus - being that I am, eventually, it seems, a nihilist. Alas, I will allow these chemicals to be inspired by supreme creativity. Creativity that feels like once you heard it you know it was only ever created in a singular moment. Blessed we are for the technology to record - and yes not Bowie, U2, Radiohead, etc they do it over and over and $ and $ (money) but not my guy : Mr David Sylvian
Apologies - I waffle . . .

@@mexicanson Ande- I appreciate the response and agree: agree to the "memorable, timeless" of Mon. Sylvian. But respect Bowie followed, and influenced, the art of the moment - just as, let's say architects follow a trend, sculptors use the same materials, etc producing stuff (shit) to please instagram and sad stuff like that - but really my point is (and I know we agree on this) Sylvian sculpted his architecture without the influence of contemporary trappings. I hope I am right but who knows - like art, dance, music, poetry, maths, architecture, we only get to observe and comment . . . . and yet our greatest blessing: we get to experience!!!!. And we are blessed, specifically in David Sylvian's case to be the most fortunate of voyeurs.
People can't handle the level of emotion Sylvian traverses - Cold Play, U2 - even Radiohead- even Radiohead! won't go where David Sylvian has respectfully, intelligently and above all: lovingly ventured - and in our eyes conquered. And we speak because of the enlightenment David created.

Gonna go listen to European Son . . . . .
