He Would Have Laughed
Deerhunter Lyrics

Find the ways to (cult)
Cult of time
Only bored as I get older
Find new ways to spend my time
I'm a gold digging man
Find my money, find my land
I'm a gold digging man
I won't rest 'til I buy your land
In sweetness comes suffering
I won't rest till I can't breath
I can't breath with you
Looking at me
I get bored as I get older
Can you help me figure this out?
Come on, come on
"I lived on a table, I don't know where to go.
I know my friends would,
I know where my friends are now.
I lived on a farm, yeah.
I never lived on a farm.
Where did my friends go?
Where did my friends go?"
What do you do when you're sleeping?
Where do you go when you said:
"I don't need nobody on my bond"
"I don't need nobody on my bond"
Where do your friends go?
Where do they see you?
What did you want to be?
Ah shut the hell
Shut your mouth
Deerhunter's "He Would Have Laughed" is a melancholic and haunting song that explores themes of boredom, mortality, and searching for meaning in life. Throughout the song, the lyrics reveal a sense of restlessness and unease with growing older and feeling increasingly directionless. The repeated phrase "Only bored as I get older, find new ways to spend my time" speaks to this sense of restlessness and the need to constantly seek out new experiences and distractions in order to stave off the boredom of a life without purpose.
The lines "I'm a gold digging man, find my money, find my land" suggest a desire for material wealth and status, but also hint at a deeper sense of emptiness and a need for external validation. The lyrics "In sweetness comes suffering, I won't rest till I can't breath, I can't breath with you looking at me" reveal a fear of intimacy and a sense of suffocation in relationships, echoing the earlier line "I don't need nobody on my bond." The final lines of the song, "Where did my friends go? Where did they see you? What did you want to be? Ah shut the hell, shut your mouth" suggest a frustration and sense of disconnection with the world and a deep longing for meaning and connection.
Overall, "He Would Have Laughed" is a powerful meditation on the human condition, exploring the ways in which we grapple with our own mortality and struggle to find purpose and meaning in a world that often feels empty and meaningless.

RIP Luke. You would have laughed.

This song was a tribute to Jimmy Lee Lindsey, Jr, AKA Jay Reatard. Jimmy was a unique and amazing person, and this was a song for people that knew him. If you knew him, it would all make sense. He was punk through and through. He hated anything that was even the slightest bit pretentious, and if someone played this for him, he would've definitely laughed and made fun of it mercilessly. He hated really long songs, so that's why it's so long. He hated people that complained about life, and he hated songs that used a lot of production tricks. I laughed the entire time the first time I heard this. I was just thinking of his reaction, and I guess that's the point. RIP, bro.

One of the best songs ever. Even just musically it's amazing, but the lyrics take it to a whole other level.
"I won't rest until I can't breathe, and I can't breathe with you looking at me" ffs
