The Space Between
Valencia Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That says if I were to get in a car right now
North Carolina is where I would end
And to your doorstep I would be bound.
To whisper the words that I've always wanted to say,
And watch as the sun rips this blue sky away
Cause the colors are always changing
So stare up through the clouds
And at least you know
You're always looking up
So Casey can you remember (do you remember)
Sitting by my side
On the bank of the Delaware River
And talking about life
Don't forget about the blue skies, sunrise, and all the space between
It's amazing how a girl like you can affect a guy like me
All the pictures, memories and all the times we had
Do you think that some things are better left unsaid?
We'd stay inside just to watch the time go by
And sleep the whole day till the night
With everything you said
I'm sure you've got some place that you'd probably rather be
I hope you're singing this song
And thinking about me
Cause Carolina was waiting for you
It's what you always wanted
Don't forget about the blue skies, sunrise, and all the space between
It's amazing how a girl like you could affect a guy like me
With the pictures, memories and all the times we had
Do you think that some things are better left unsaid?
And we run away
Cause the sky looks different when you're in another state
It's everything I've always wanted
And everything I've worked so hard for
Is it in me
To put the bottle down?
Is it in me?
The lyrics of Valencia's "The Space Between" convey a longing for a person that's currently far away, the desire to express one's feelings and fears, and the sense that life is fleeting and unpredictable. The opening lines describe a strange feeling in the singer's head that pulls them towards North Carolina, where the person they miss is located. Despite the uncertainty and risk of making the trip, the singer imagines arriving at the doorsteps of their loved one and finally saying what they've always wanted to say. The mention of the changing colors and the fading sun highlights the impermanence of things, but also suggests that some things, like the person's memory and presence, endure.
The chorus repeats the idea of "the space between," the intangible but significant distance that separates the singer from their loved one. The singer urges themselves and their friend Casey to remember the good times they had together, the moments of beauty and connection that made the pain of being apart more bearable. The song acknowledges the power of memory to shape our emotions and decisions, and suggests that some things are best left unsaid or unchased, perhaps because they are too precious or too fragile to risk ruining.
The bridge of the song adds a note of introspection and self-doubt. The singer wonders if they are capable of letting go of their self-destructive tendencies, symbolized by the bottle, and moving on from their obsession with the person who left. The final lines of the song leave the question open-ended, suggesting that the singer is still struggling with this dilemma and that the future is uncertain.
Overall, "The Space Between" is a song that captures the bittersweet feeling of missing someone you love, the desire to hold on to memories and hope, and the awareness of life's fragility and complexity.

There's something strange going on in my head
I have an urge to drop everything and drive to North Carolina to see a special someone
That says if I were to get in a car right now
The feeling inside me is so strong it's like a voice telling me what to do
North Carolina is where I would end
My heart and mind are set on this particular destination
And to your doorstep I would be bound.
I would go straight to the person I want to see
To whisper the words that I've always wanted to say,
There are things I want to express that I may not have before
And watch as the sun rips this blue sky away
I want to be there with the person and watch the sunset together
Cause the colors are always changing
Nothing stays the same, everything is constantly shifting
So stare up through the clouds
Stay focused and look up towards the skies for inspiration
And at least you know
Take comfort in the knowledge that
You're always looking up
you're always aspiring to something higher
So Casey can you remember (do you remember)
Do you remember when we used to hang out by the river and talk about life, Casey?
Sitting by my side
You were always there for me
On the bank of the Delaware River
We used to meet by the river
And talking about life
We'd share our thoughts and feelings on the world and its challenges
Don't forget about the blue skies, sunrise, and all the space between
Don't forget to appreciate the beauty of the world around us
It's amazing how a girl like you can affect a guy like me
You have had an incredible impact on my life, and I am grateful for that
All the pictures, memories and all the times we had
I treasure every moment we spent together, and everything we did together brings a smile to my face
Do you think that some things are better left unsaid?
Is it better to keep some things to ourselves, even if we want to say them?
We'd stay inside just to watch the time go by
Sometimes we would just hang out inside, enjoying each other's company and the passing of time
And sleep the whole day till the night
We would often sleep in together, embracing the luxury of nothing to do and nowhere to go
With everything you said
You always had so much to tell me
I'm sure you've got some place that you'd probably rather be
There are probably other things and people that you prioritize in your life
I hope you're singing this song
I hope that somehow, in some way, you hear this message
And thinking about me
I hope you remember the times we had, and the moments we shared
Cause Carolina was waiting for you
I know that you have your own life and dreams to pursue, and I understand that
It's what you always wanted
I respect your choices and decisions, and wish you all the best in your pursuits
And we run away
Sometimes we need to escape from the pressures and stresses of daily life
Cause the sky looks different when you're in another state
Traveling can give us a new perspective on life and remind us of the beauty of the world
It's everything I've always wanted
My desire to travel and see new things has always been a part of me
And everything I've worked so hard for
I have worked hard to achieve my dreams, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue them
Is it in me
Do I have what it takes
To put the bottle down?
To resist temptation and overcome addiction?

2018.. I remember when this song came out in 2006/2007 whenever it was. Still just as good along with the other songs. When the lead singer's gf died in a car accident I was devasted for him. He wrote a lot of his songs about her... Before and after her passing. Such a great band and missing them terribly.
