Deadbolt
[Thrice] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When deadbolts awake you from deja vu dreams,
At four in the morning you know where I'll be.
Out running red lights asleep at the wheel.
The sirens feed my nightmares,

I just close my eyes and I'm already there;
Its already too late.
I know its nothing but lies,
But they sound so sincere;
I find them too hard to hate.

And she calls from the doorway "stolen water is so sweet,
So lets drink in the darkness if you know what I mean"
And she calls from the doorway "stolen water is so sweet,
So lets drink in the darkness if you know what I mean"

And I'm almost sure
That I've been here before,
That this is not the first time I've stood in front of this door,
With an overwhelming feeling that I shouldn't go in,
But it seems this is a battle that I never could win.

And you!
My true love!
You call from the hilltop.
You call through the streets,
"Darling don't you know,
The water is poison."
And I say!
"come on and give me my poison."

What have I done.?
Is it too late to save me from this place?
From the depths of the grave?
We all are those

Who thought we were brave.
What have I done.?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Thrice's "Deadbolt" describe a feeling of being trapped and addicted to something that is ultimately harmful. The first verse describes a sense of déjà vu, where the singer knows he will end up running red lights and being chased by sirens. He acknowledges that he knows the things he is hearing are lies, but he finds them difficult to hate. The chorus then shifts to a woman's voice, encouraging the singer to indulge in something that is illicit and dangerous, with the metaphor of "stolen water is so sweet."

The second verse continues the theme of feeling doomed to repeat the same mistakes, with the singer having an overwhelming feeling that he shouldn't enter a particular place, but unable to resist. The bridge brings in another voice, that of the singer's true love, calling out from a hilltop and warning that the water is poison. But the singer responds by asking for his poison anyway, indicating that he knows what he is doing is harmful, but can't resist the pull. The song ends with a haunting repetition of the question, "What have I done?" suggesting that the singer is aware of the damage he is causing but unable to break free from the addiction.
