Phoenix Ignition
[Thrice] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like a crematorium
Like the swelling Volition
From the Barrel of a gun
From the ashes and the amber's
Like a rocket I'll ascend
Like a cry gone up for a fallen friend
Every day tear down these walls
Till cornerstones remain
Coming one step closer all the time
And although we'll never reach perfection
Always persist to try
Always try
No Regrets
Just rebirth
Move forward
And Ignite
Incandescent
Reinvention
A new Renaissance
A new fire each day
The lyrics to Thrice's song Phoenix Ignition depict the idea of rising from the ashes and igniting a new fire every day. The imagery of a phoenix ignition and a crematorium symbolizes the idea of destruction as a means for rebirth. The swelling volition signifies a strong will or determination, much like the strength needed to pull the trigger of a gun. From the ashes and the ambers, the singer feels as if he's ascending like a rocket, representing the feeling of rising above the destruction and becoming something new. The cry for a fallen friend suggests the idea of mourning, but also the idea of pushing forward in their honor.
The second verse represents the idea of breaking down walls and pushing past them, even if it takes time. The notion of never reaching perfection, but rather always trying suggests that it's important to persist in the face of obstacles. The chorus then returns to the idea of moving forward and igniting a new fire every day, encouraging listeners to strive for reinvention and a new renaissance.

Baring in mind I live in the UK, about 15 years ago(we have no guns here) I wrote some inconsequential song lyrics on the back of a physics exam when in the depths of depression when I didn't understand what it all meant ' like a swelling volition from the barrel of a gun' I was a bit confused when my parents got called into school for it. Fun times.

Got into this band about a year ago, starting at Artist In The Ambulance and working forwards. As awesome as that was and as much as I love all their music, I wish I'd worked backwards. I was missing out on some good stuff. :D

Damn, I saw this band live in 2001 & got this album. I remember playing it for my friends & they were like take that off & were totally not feeling it until like 4 years later they had they're newer stuff & was trying to show it me. Fucking posers, I was like I showed this band years ago & they pretended like they didnt remember.
