Kill Me Quickly
[Thrice] Lyrics

Can we kill each other quickly,
Quick enough so I won't feel it?
A shot of strobe light anesthesia and I'll be fine
'Cause I'm beginning to feel cold.
My hands are shaking from fear,
White from clutching my pride, red from cutting you
'Cause I'm sick of the stabbing, I'm sick of the breaking
I'm sick of the bleeding until we fall down.
Sick of this circle of death that we dance through again
And again, just lay me in the ground
Let's fall asleep together, hold me darling 'cause I'm scared,
And I can't do this alone.
But I need your heartbeat to haunt me, your cold lips to breathe,
A promise that tomorrow we'll wake up somewhere new.
The song “Kill Me Quickly” by Thrice is a powerful depiction of the turbulent and painful nature of relationships. In the opening lines, the singer suggests that they want to end the relationship quickly, before they have to feel the pain of separation. The image of “a shot of strobe light anesthesia” indicates a desire to dull the pain and escape quickly, without having to endure the difficult process of emotional separation.
The following verse describes the physical and emotional toll the relationship has taken on both parties. The singer’s hands are shaking with fear, representing their anxiety about the situation. They are also described as being blue from telling lies, perhaps illustrating the tangled web of deception that has been spun within the relationship. The chorus repeats the phrase “I’m sick of,” emphasizing the exhaustion and desperation of the singer. They feel trapped in a never-ending cycle of pain and hurt, and long for release.
The final lines of the song take a poignant turn, expressing a desire to fall asleep together, to find comfort and support in each other’s presence. The singer needs their partner’s physical presence and connection to get through their fear and uncertainty. However, they also express a longing for new beginnings, for the promise of a brighter future together.
Overall, “Kill Me Quickly” is a brutally honest and emotional portrayal of the ups and downs of relationships. It speaks to the pain and struggle of trying to preserve a connection while also acknowledging that sometimes, the best thing to do is to let go and move on.

Can we
Can we kill each other quickly?
Quick enough so I won't feel it?
A shot of strobe light anesthesia
And I'll be fine
As I'm beginning to feel cold
My hands are shaking from fear
White from clutching my pride
Red from cutting you
And blue from telling lies
Cause I'm sick of the stabbing
I'm sick of the breaking
I'm sick of the bleeding until we fall down
Sick of this circle of death that we dance through
Again and again, just lay me in the ground
Let's fall asleep together
Hold me darling cause I'm scared
And I can't do this alone
But I need
Your heartbeat
To haunt me
Your cold lips to breathe
A promise that tomorrow
We'll wake up somewhere new

This album blew my brain out of the back of my skull when I discovered it in my early 20s. This cd was ALWAYS in my car, and played loud af, pushing the limit of those stock Subaru speakers. This got me out of some pretty rough times, and it was downright eerie sometimes, how much the lyrics resonated with me. Listening to this incredible album, front to back, is a ritual I hadn’t performed for far too long.
