Daho is best known in Britain for his appearence on the number 11 Saint Etienne hit single "He's On The Phone", which is an English-language adaptation of his 1984 French-language hit "Weekend à Rome". He also collaborated with Saint Etienne on the Resurrection EP, his album Eden, and his single "Le Premier Jour", itself based on the track "Ready or Not" from Sarah Cracknell's 1997 solo album "Lipslide".
He has worked with many other artists, such as Chris Isaak, Marianne Faithfull, Elli Medeiros, Astrud Gilberto, Vanessa Daou, the Swingle Singers, and more. His duet with Charlotte Gainsbourg, titled "If", was released in 2004.
His 1996 album Eden featured a mix of electronic-oriented songs, ranging from downtempo ballads to drum 'n' bass-influenced tracks, and HiNRG dance. Corps & armes (2000) saw Daho return to a more orchestral sound fuelled by traditional instruments, such as piano, acoustic guitar, and horns. In 2004, he released Réévolution, which featured a guitar-heavy rock sound.
In 2012, he produced and composed songs for French comedian/singer Lou Doillon for her first album Places.
Étienne Daho is one of the most influential French pop singers of the last four decades. His extensive work has seen him collaborate with many artists, and explore a wide range of musical styles.
Nocturne
Étienne Daho Lyrics

Archangéliques et dérangées
Dresse ma flèche Technicolor
Dans ce ciel flingué météore
Théâtre de l'étreinte sacrée
Échanges vifs dans les cafés
Sur la peau la sueur, le lézard
Blizzard endimanché
Avalanche intimidée
Bataille des airs épuisée
Verbe voyager léger
La tension de l'orage annoncé
Dans les rocheuses et les glaciers
Je m'allongerai sur cet autel
Ces paradis sacrificiels
Aux jeunes heures du matin doré
Ton miel imite le printemps
Flambe citadelle pour le goût du jeu
Et les gratte-ciel des jours heureux
Blizzard endimanché
Avalanche intimidée
Baptême des airs apaisé
Nous allons voyager
Nous allons voyager
Nous allons voyager légers
In Étienne Daho's song "Nocturne," the lyrics create a dreamlike and atmospheric world filled with vivid imagery and emotions. The song reflects on a journey through an enigmatic and perhaps troubled landscape, where the singer feels a sense of urgency and a need for escape. The opening lines set the stage with "Sous ces étoiles envenimées / Archangéliques et dérangées" (Under these venomous and disturbed stars), describing a celestial space that is both enchanting and unsettling.
As the song progresses, it explores themes of passion, desire, and connection. It mentions "Échanges vifs dans les cafés" (Lively exchanges in the cafes), hinting at moments of intense conversation and encounters that take place in intimate spaces. The mention of sweat on the skin and the tears on the guitar string evoke a sense of vulnerability and raw emotion.
The chorus introduces the image of a "blizzard endimanché" (Sunday-dressed blizzard) and an "avalanche intimidée" (intimidated avalanche), painting a picture of a powerful natural force restrained by external circumstances. This can be interpreted as a metaphor for the internal struggles and conflicts faced by the singer. The lyrics also mention a "baptême des airs" (baptism of the air), suggesting a sense of liberation and renewal through taking flight and embracing new experiences.
Towards the end of the song, there is a shift in tone, as the lyrics speak of "ton miel imite le printemps" (your honey imitates spring) and the "gratte-ciel des jours heureux" (skyscrapers of happy days). This transition signifies a glimmer of hope and the possibility of a brighter future. It concludes with the repetition of the phrase "Nous allons voyager légers" (We will travel light), emphasizing the desire for freedom, exploration, and an unburdened existence.
Overall, "Nocturne" offers a poetic and introspective journey through a landscape of complex emotions, seeking solace and transcendence through connection and the pursuit of liberation.
