In Мафия's song "Веселый Роджер" (Jolly Roger), the verses describe life on a ship at sea. The crew is facing a dire situation as they have been at sea for a hundred days and have run out of food and freshwater. The sailor in charge of the ship's rigging, the Boatswain, is working hard and has just shot and killed three of his fellow crewmen. Meanwhile, the captain is hiding something in the ship's hold.
The chorus of the song describes the legendary pirate captain, Jolly Roger, who is spreading fear and terror throughout the distant islands he visits. The second verse describes the chaos among the crew aboard the ship. There are two nooses hanging from the mast, and on deck, the sailors are engaged in a profane argument and are drinking whiskey. The cook has just killed the overweight sailor with a kitchen knife.
In the third verse, the situation comes to a head, the captain is thrown overboard, and the Boatswain is shot at point-blank range. It becomes a free-for-all, with the survivors fighting tooth and nail. The last line of the verse implies the singer has survived the chaos and emerged as someone's brother.
The song's overall theme is one of lawlessness, anarchy, and the brutal force that is used to maintain order aboard a ship. The lyrics depict a society of marauders where strength and cunning are the keys to survival.
