Lousy Reputation
■We Are Scientists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why do I keep finding myself so surprised?
The qualities you openly have advertised
A bigger man might not feel so compromised
But I've never been that sane and I won't start tonight

It's burning me up, I've heard it enough
I won't let your lousy reputation throw me off
I've heard it enough
I won't let your lousy reputation throw me

I've heard some things I guess it's better not to know
It's pretty bad as far as first impressions go
A bigger man could probably get past it all
Oh the problem here is that I just won't grow up, so what

It's burning me up, I've heard it enough
I won't let your lousy reputation throw me off
I've heard it enough
I won't let your lousy reputation throw me off, off, off

It's burning me up, I've heard it enough
I won't let your lousy reputation throw me off

I've heard it enough
I won't let your lousy reputation throw me off

Overall Meaning

The song "Lousy Reputation" by We Are Scientists is about dealing with the negative perceptions people have of a certain individual. The singer seems to have developed feelings for someone, but is constantly being reminded of their "lousy reputation" which is causing doubt and hesitation. The qualities this person has advertised openly are causing the singer to second-guess their decision to pursue a relationship with them. The singer admits that a bigger man might not feel so compromised, but he's not that sane and he doesn't plan on changing that.

Despite hearing some things about this person that are better left unknown and bad first impressions, the singer still has strong feelings for them. However, he acknowledges that the problem is with himself because he's not willing to grow up and move past other people's opinions. In the end, the singer decides that he won't let this “lousy reputation” throw him off and will continue to pursue this person despite what others think.

The lyrics could be interpreted as not letting outside influences affect one's own judgement and choices. The singer refuses to let other people's opinions sway his own feelings about this person. The message is to be confident in one's own choices and not let external factors like gossip or judgement from others interfere.

A bit of white pill:
Back in the 90s, the writer Grant Morrison made the case that what is considered “cool” is always counter cultural. Almost no teen takes official statements like a “school is cool” poster to be true.
Because all this stuff is being hammered hard by the schools, it is likely that it will be resisted.
I hope so, anyway

How about a peaceful place for Christian students to pray in school if they wish?

@emilymiller1792

My public high school had a club for religious students. They had prayer meetings before school. My local public school has Fellowship for Christian Atheletes.

Would this quiet place to pray be open to Jewish or Muslim students, etc, too?

Just sayin’ “hi” for the algorithm
