The Great Escape
■We Are Scientists Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm making my escape, making my escape
I tell myself that everything's in shape
Everything's in shape, but me
How long can we stay, how long can we stay?
I tell myself that everything is great
Everything is great, well how am I doing?

I've got a great idea
I'm going to wait right here
I've got a great idea
I'm going to wait right here
While everything is adding
Up, up, up
Everything is adding
Up, up, up

Breaking both my hands, breaking both my hands
Telling me to 'take it like a man'
Take it like a man, I can't
I don't understand, I don't understand
Please repeat whatever you just said
Nothing's making sense, well how am I doing?

I've got a great idea
I'm going to wait right here
I've got a great idea
I'm going to wait right here
While everything is adding
Up, up, up
Everything is adding
Up, up, up

They're breaking both my hands, they're breaking both my hands
They're telling me to 'take it like a man'
Take it like a man, well fuck that
I don't understand, said, I don't understand
So please repeat whatever you just said
'Cause nothing's making sense, well how am I doing?

I've got a great idea
I'm going to wait right here
I've got a great idea
I'm going to wait right here
While everything is adding
Up, up, up

While everything is adding
Up, up, up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Great Escape" by We Are Scientists talk about the pressure of trying to keep everything together in one's life, even when things are falling apart. The singer is making his escape mentally from the chaos of his life while telling himself that everything is fine. The repetition of the line "everything is in shape/everything is great" suggests that the singer is trying to convince himself that things are under control, but he knows they are not, indicated by his repetitive questioning of "how am I doing?".

The song's tone is somewhat sarcastic, as the singer uses phrases like "take it like a man" and "well, how am I doing?" to mock the idea that we should just endure our difficulties without seeking help or support. The chorus emphasizes the theme of feeling overwhelmed and waiting for things to add up, perhaps hoping that they will improve eventually.

Overall, "The Great Escape" is a commentary on the pressure to maintain a facade of perfection and control in our lives while facing difficult circumstances. It encourages listeners to seek help and support when needed, rather than trying to go it alone.

Story 1:

Ok so I had a cat names misty, she was an outside cat. She hates being inside for too long and would scratch us if we didnt let me go outside. We gave her the eight care too. We had a little room for her where we gave her food, bed, toys and other things. I went in there to feed her and I was petting her as she ate BUT THEN.. I started to feel itching all over my legs. I didnt think much of it so I scratched my legs. The itching kept coming back but I felt it on my thighs too. I looked down and saw like 200 fleas ALL OVER MY LEGS- I LET OUT TUE LOUDEST SCREAM AND RAN INTO THE SHOWER
At this point my mum heard me scream and rushed upstairs I had to tell her what happened while in the shower
She brang me new clothes thankfully.
Omg ok so I have no idea how but the fleas kinda spread through the house and one day I woke up a lil itchy, went to shower and in the water was dead fleas. We had to call somewhere that gets rid of them 😭

Story 2: When I was younger, I used to play outside a lot with my brother and my nejghbours. Our garden isnt really like other gardens. It's really big but theres tall grass and thorns and broken things everywhere. Although it sounds bad, it was like a jungle to us kids. Theres was a place at the far back that we called "The foxes home" That's because in the summertime, they would stay in the shade over there. Me and my neighbours usually went there too.
One day, we were walking through the thorns and grass to get there. When we got there, WE SAW AN INFESTATION OF LARGE SPIDERS- THERE WERE LIKE 20 SCURRYING ON THE FENCE- I didnt notice they were there so I was up to the fence to try and look over. I didnt realise they were crawling all over my body until my neighbours and brother started screaming- I finally saw what was happening and I was in shock to try and get away 😬 I was trying to run back through the thorns to get home but I was so scared I was being stung by the thorns and bitten by the spiders that i fell over face first into the thorns and the tall grass and hit my head on something really hard and woke up in a hospital bed🤧
