Defect defect
Not straight, not so straight
Reject reject
Towards anti-social
Standing on the stairs
Cold, cold morning
Mayday mayday
Gonna leave this region
They'll take me with them
Dimension seven
Straight as an arrow
Defect defect
Not straight, not so straight
Reject reject
Towards anti-social
(Alt: So dumb, so dumb)
Dimension seven (x7)
The song "D7" by Nirvana is considered a B-side track from the band's "Nevermind" sessions. The lyrics of this song showcase the band's exploration of themes of alienation and disconnection from society, which was a common theme in Nirvana's writing.
The first stanza of "D7" describes a sense of rejection towards society, and the feeling of being considered "defective". The repetition of the phrase "not straight, not so straight, reject reject towards anti-social" emphasizes the feelings of being labeled as an outsider. The second stanza of the song seems to be referring to suicide, with the lines "standing on the stairs, cold cold morning, ghostly image of fear". It is speculated that this may reference the suicide of a friend of the band's, musician and artist Simon Ritchie, also known as “Sid Vicious".
The chorus of "D7" references a "dimension seven", which could be interpreted as a state of mind or an alternate reality where the singer feels more accepted. The repetition of this line throughout the song adds to the feeling of longing for a better place away from the negative feelings in the current reality.
