Pretender
Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
The lyrics to "Pretender" by 二宮和也 depict a bittersweet love story. The singer acknowledges that their relationship with their love interest is predictable and feels like a one-person play. Despite being by their side all the time, the singer realizes they are just a spectator. They apologize for not having genuine emotions, but it is something that has become their usual state. They come to the realization that their romance with this person is not meant to continue.
The song explores the concept of longing for a different scenario and a different connection with their love interest. The singer wishes they could have met under different circumstances or had different personalities and values. They yearn to be able to express their love in a more meaningful way. However, they acknowledge that it is futile to hope for such changes and resign themselves to say goodbye.
Overall, "Pretender" delves into the complexities of unrequited love and the longing for a different outcome in a relationship. It touches upon themes of self-reflection, acceptance, and the realization that sometimes things cannot be forced or changed.
