Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song 白蘭の歌, translated as "Song of the White Orchid", is a tribute to the Japanese soldiers who fought and died in the Second World War. The lyrics describe the beauty of the white orchid flower, which symbolizes the souls of the fallen soldiers, and their sacrifice for their country. The singer describes how the blood shed on the mountains and rivers has nourished the flowers, and how they bloom in the hearts and eyes of the people who mourn for their loved ones.

The song's chorus speaks of the "Song of the White Orchid" which must be sung now, at a time when the storm has cleared and the blue sky and bright sun of a new day shine upon the country. The lyrics urge people to pick a flower and sing this song, so that the memories of the brave soldiers and their love for their homeland may never be forgotten.

The song was written by Kuroki Gorō in 1943, during the middle of World War II, and was sung by pop singer Itoh Hisao. Despite the song's popularity at the time, it has since been regarded as a controversial anthem due to its connection to Japan's militaristic past, and the use of the white orchid flower by the Imperial Army as a symbol of their cause.
