Ohashi got her start in music when she joined a band while she was at Hokkaido University.
Inspired by such artists like Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 and Janice Joplin, Ohashi hoped to add soulful singing to her music. She later became a DJ at a local radio station before having a part-time job at the Yamada Headquarters in Tokyo.
There, she auditioned for a chance to release music and won a record deal.
In 1974, Ohashi made her debut with the album Feeling Now and the single "Kagi wa Kaeshite". Her second album, Paper Moon, helped to gain Ohashi some popularity. But it wasn't till 1977 with the single "Simple Love" that Ohashi gained a smash hit. Throughout the late 70s and 80s, a couple of her singles also became big hits.

都会の闇に紛れて 密やかなLove affair
Mystery of 0 a.m. in the dark
Mystery of 0 a.m. in the night.
見えない心 掴めない
追う程 逃げて行く
本気と遊び 裏腹に
さまよう心
あなたの中の 別人が
目覚める その夜は
真っ赤なルージュ 引いた時
Mystery of 0 a.m. in the night.
The lyrics of "Mystery of 0 a.m." by Junko Ohashi paint a picture of a secret love affair in the late hours of the city. The song begins with the description of a cityscape at night, with buildings and their windows like silent witnesses to the hidden romance taking place. The dim lights and intertwining silhouettes create an atmosphere of secrecy and intimacy.
The first verse suggests that love is born in that window, but it also fades away in the same night. The lyrics portray love as a dangerous game, always carrying the risk of getting hurt. The theme of elusiveness and unpredictability emerges, as the singer cannot see or grasp the heart and intentions of their lover. The more they try to understand, the more it slips away, blurring the lines between sincerity and playfulness. This mysterious love affair is characterized as the "Mystery of 0 a.m. in the dark."
The second verse introduces the image of a pale moon gradually being covered by dark clouds, symbolizing the hidden meetings of the two lovers. The overlapping of clock hands, signaling midnight, prompts them to close the back window in secrecy. The lyrics imply that despite their clandestine encounters, they always have to return to the same routine and face their everyday lives. Additionally, there is mention of another woman living within the lover's heart, highlighting the complexity and conflicting emotions within the relationship.
The chorus repeats the notion that the singer cannot see or grasp the lover's true self and feelings. The more they pursue, the more elusive it becomes. The lyrics emphasize the contrasting nature of love, where sincerity and playfulness coexist. The singer's wandering heart is also portrayed, potentially caught between different emotions or desires.
The final lines repeat the image of a different person awakening within the lover and the red lipstick being drawn, a symbol of passion or transformation. Again, the song refers to the "Mystery of 0 a.m. in the night," reinforcing the mysterious and enigmatic nature of this love affair.
Overall, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of a secret love affair hidden within the bustling cityscape. They explore themes of elusiveness, danger, conflicting emotions, and the complexity of love. The late-night setting and the secrecy surrounding the relationship add a touch of intrigue and mystery to the song.
