Tsuri ni Ikou
Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "Tsuri ni Ikou" by 矢野顕子 (Akiko Yano) reminisces about childhood memories of going fishing with a friend. The opening lines describe the singer as being younger than the friend and looking up at a mole on their chin. The friend is characterized as carefree, spending their days playing and napping. However, the friend is also depicted as a frequent liar, always getting away with it because the singer pretends to believe them. Despite this, the singer suggests going fishing together, promising to pick them up when it stops raining.

As they go fishing, the friend falls back asleep, indifferent to the fish they could catch. In trying to emulate their friend's sleeping habits, the singer finds themselves unable to rest: rustling leaves tickle their nose and remind them of the present moment. In the final verse, the singer imagines revisiting that same river as an adult and finding their friend still asleep. They suggest going fishing again, this time promising to be the one doing the picking up.

Overall, "Tsuri ni Ikou" captures the nostalgic feeling of returning to a childhood memory and the desire to recapture that feeling of simple joy and camaraderie.

I don't know why, but I cry every time the 2nd verse comes along. Just this version, not other singers' renditions. Definitely tapping into some collective nostalgia for the innocence of childhood, the sheer beauty & transience of life.
