What really makes this scene chilling (heh the irony) is being lowered into freezing water in an unknown part of the ocean with hundreds if not thousands of feet of water below you. That board snaps and you will plunge to the sea floor like a rock. Seeing something like that coming towards you underwater would be absolutely terrifying since you know you should be the only human being down there..

I was thinking the same thing but I realized they had tied a knot around his waist, so if the board did snap he’d still have that as his last lifeline before plummeting to his watery grave.

I love how this completely captures the horror of being faced with something truly terrifying floating towards you. It'll just keep getting closer, reaching out to you as if it had a will of its own, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. It's just coming closer, slowly, but soon it'll brush into you.

As a commercial diver I can tell you here and now that you see all kinds of shit in the abyss. Down at 300+ ft below in the pitch dark, the eerie static in our helmets over comms is the only thing we hear and the slights movement in the dark makes me jump every time.

@marcus caines Actually, being drunk is terrible for surviving such cold water as alcohol drops your blood temp and etc

what saved the guy who was drunk in the titanic scenario was that the alcohol prevented his body from going into shock from the cold water

as such he was able to dog paddle and move his body continually which kept him warm and stopped him freezing to death until he was rescued by the boats.

the man was just plunged into freezing cold waters for like 5 minutes and after his head and body was exposed to antartic winds. he was for sure very cold hence why they were giving him brandy (it was thought back then brandy warms you up).

Earlier in the episode, Mr Collins (the diver) was there when the man fell overboard, and was trying to help him. He would have dived in to try to save him if he hadn't been prevented. You can then faintly see the drowned man sinking under the water, arms outstretched. So in this scene, while it's terrifying enough to see a corpse floating towards you, it must have seemed especially personal to Mr Collins, maybe even vengeful. Maybe that's why he couldn't bring himself to tell anyone else what he saw.

I also think he's not really sure about what he just saw, hence why he tells nobody about this, to not appear like he's crazy since he would be the only one to have seen the body floating eventhough it could be real since the guy fell in the water earlier, and when asked he tells it felt 'like a dream'. Nice touch.

The figure in the water is the corpse of the diver's friend, who fell into the water a few days earlier and died. The diver wanted to jump into the water to save his friend, but was held back by others on board, who knew it would be suicide. Wracked by guilt and fear, you can think of it as if the diver hallucinated the whole event, especially with the presence of lead poisoning in their food, but I like to think that the sight of his friend was a genuinely supernatural, inexplicable event without any logical answers or scientific reasoning.

Men just don't belong that far North, and the magic that resides in those climates are the same types of magic that will warn you to stay out, or kill you if you venture closer. His friend may not have been "angry" at the diver for leaving him to his death, but it almost seems as if the floating corpse is in deep sorrow, and wants to return back to the boat with the living, almost as if he doesn't know he's supposed to be dead.

He could have been trying to warn his diver friend, or he could have been trying to get revenge. He could have been trying to grasp onto his diving friend, the same way a drowning man grasps anything nearby to help him keep alive. Or, perhaps, he could have been trying to drag his friend to his death as well, so he would not have to spend eternity alone in the frozen seas.

I think that the drowned friend is destined to swim forever in the unforgiving North, dragging explorers foolish enough to enter the water into a watery grave. In fact, now I am almost certain that he would have dragged his diving friend down to his death if he had somehow managed to catch him before he was pulled up. The corpse hadn't simply floated all those miles to appear at that exact moment by mere coincidence. The corpse had swam.

@Dave Gordon strong wood reminds me of the house I live in. We had to take down a wall and roof because there was some water damage. Wood was alot stronger than what is used today. Trees grow and are cut down as fast as possible for maximum profit which results in worse quality.

Best scene of the whole series. As if it wasn’t terrifying enough to be lifted down into the endless deep, dark and ice cold sea with the very possibility that whatever shall hold you snaps and you’ll sink towards the bottom like a stone.

This show was an absolute master piece. Best production I've ever seen on television by far. Second season was abysmal (turned it off after 20 minutes) I wish they would stick with the context of 'mysterious historical events and putting their own spin on them,' like they did with the Northwest Passage expedition of the Erebus and Terror. Why not do something like the Dyatlov Pass Incident?

While a Boy Scout we camped on the Catalina islands where I pursued my sailing merit badge. One of the requirements was to perform a “man over board” rescues. When it came time for me to play the victim I jumped in gazed upon and the shear vastness of the open ocean. It’s terrifying. To be totally at the mercy of the ocean and what ever lies out there. With such a blank view your mind runs wild of the horrors that you know are out there but you can’t see them. Things can appear and disappear just like that, you can’t really react... if a shark or whale came in for a look they cut through that water and are gone. So here’s mr bobbing in Huge waves seeing glimpses of the open ocean, then my fellow crew missed me and had to do an entire circle back. That’s when I began to feel a bit of panic, I wanted out.

as a diver who uses this type of diving gear, it is very well done and accurately portrayed. while the diving suit may be late 19th century but it is essentially the same as used in 1850. glad to see it done right.

This clip alone inspired me to watch the series when it was uploaded. And now I'm bugging everybody to watch this. Some critic "praised" this as a slow burner but he is wrong. I felt like I was reading an atmospheric Edgar Allan Poe novel while watching this. A sense of dread and gloom pervades you when watching it. And it's utterly entertaining.

This is one of the few scenes I have scene where I have been filled with anxiety and fear. The thought of descending in to the blackness. Who know what is down there. And one slip and you would sink in to the murky depths in that suit. Then to see that ghoul slowly coming towards you. Shivers down my spine moment 😬

i LOVED this series. the atmosphere is some of the thickest ive seen. did kinda go downhill as the supernatural elements started taking over, but i guess that was necessary if it was going to be faithful to the book.

I had no context (still dont) before watching this scene, it was one of those things that just pops up in your recommended. but jesus christ is this well done. you really get the sense that theres something in the water with him, the sea that we see is vast and expansive. yet the icebergs still give me a mild sense of claustrophobia. at 2:14 i get what i think may be a POV shot, it could have not been intentional but i got that vibe from it. its very eerie and, of course, it feels like something is right behind him. and then the body itself: the music gets slightly louder, which amped the effect for me. and the appearance of the body is so well done. its clear that its human, but just far enough, just blurry enough, i can barely make out a face. it lets my imagination run wild. as another comment stated, it perfectly captures that raw terror of knowing that if something isnt done, that thing will brush against you, that thing will touch you. i really liked this and i kind of want to watch the whole thing now.

on another not so scary note: this may just be me cause im a sucker for character design and historical dress, but i adore the costumes in this scene.

I haven't watched the whole series. It's hard to find at the moment, but this scene in particular is directed and edited so perfectly that I often come just to watch it. Exceptionally well done.

The ice in pancakes at 1:25 is part of what causes a deep circulation in the Atlantic Ocean (not where they are but the Greenland Sea ice). Because it's pancakes and not a solid sheet when a strong winds blows the pancakes blow away somewhere else and salt water replaces them, which makes it heavier. This might happen in a circle like 40 km (25 miles) across and then the whole lot keeps pressing down under its weight, maybe down to 8,000 feet.

The Truth the scariest part for me was him entering the water just below the surface... 1 mile or more of water beneath, just pitch black... I have nightmares of being on a rowboat, on calm flat ocean. A propeller plane dives down towards me to pick me up, then I see from above this gigantic unfathomable sized circular/oblong shape rising as the plane ascends. I wake up when I realize it’s a mouth, but on the boat and plane I am unaware.

Tom Hardy was awesome in Taboo! He did a movie called 'Bronson' and it's one of his best! I'd highly recommend it. I've seen it 3 times and still find it fascinating!

Taboo is a great show, highly recommend. I dare to say a work of art. (there's some historical inaccuracies that are a little offensive but most won't notice) If you're on the fence consider this the final push.

For fear of jumping aboard the bandwagon on this most fantastic of shows, but the fellow dressing the diver is himself an expert helmet diver and did the very same routine to me when he dressed me in one of his original helmets before my first dive. It is an unforgettable experience and one I will be forever grateful for.

Works to the same affect as seeing a spooky dooky hallucination but I found it a little more eerie in the knowledge that that man was still just floating around down there.

something that's not really mentioned here, but this diver can probably barely see, the ocean is naturally dark, there's little to no sunlight above, there's a sheet of ice on the surface, the glass on the helmet is probably difficult to see out of on its own and he has no artificial lights
basically in this situation you're not going to see anything with clarity until it is dead in front of you, inches from your face
