Cradled in imposs... impossibility?
Swooning, I am swept away
Swept off my feet, with step by step by step
We take the lead as drop by drop, we start, to bleed
(Oh, we dance in misery)
And we dance on, and we dance on
All lost in the arms of our misery, oh
(Oh, we dance in misery)
And we dance on, and we dance on
Swept off our feet by our misery, we're swept into the shadows
Will you lend yourself to beauty that will horrify?
Let me hide within your black, the still inside your eyes
Deafened, caught within a cry
So sensual, as step by step by step, I separate
As breath to breath, as I, suffocate
(Oh, we dance in misery)
And we dance on, and we dance on
(Oh, we dance in misery)
All lost in the arms of our misery, oh
(Oh, we dance in misery)
And we dance on, and we dance on
Swept off our feet by our misery, we're swept into the shadows
So who will follow? Who is the lead?
I know I'll leave a stain, because I bleed
As we dance, we all dance
We all, have no chance in this horrid romance
(Oh, we dance in misery)
And we dance on, and we dance on
(Oh, we dance in misery)
All lost in the arms of our misery, oh
(Oh, we dance in misery)
And we dance on, and we dance on
Swept off our feet by our misery, we're swept into the shadows
Swept off our feet by our misery, we're swept into the shadows
The lyrics to AFI's "Dancing Through Sunday" explores the idea of surrendering oneself to the inevitability of pain and misery, using the metaphor of a dance. The first stanza describes the feeling of being swept off one's feet by the intensity of the emotion, as the couple takes the lead in the dance of misery. The phrase "cradled in impossibility" emphasizes the hopelessness of the situation, while "drop by drop, we start to bleed" alludes to the idea that pain is a slow and steady process that can ultimately consume a person.
The second stanza takes a more sensual turn, as the focus shifts to the beauty within the horror. The singer asks to "hide within your black," finding comfort in the stillness of his partner's eyes. However, this comfort is short-lived as he becomes "deafened" by the intensity of his own emotions. The phrase "swept into the shadows" emphasizes the idea that this dance is a dark and isolating one, with no escape from the pain.
The final stanza asks the question of who is leading this dance of misery, as it seems that everyone involved is equally caught up in it. The singer acknowledges that he will "leave a stain" due to his own suffering, and that this dance is ultimately futile. The repetition of the phrase "swept off our feet" emphasizes the idea that this dance is not a choice, but rather something that happens to those caught in its grip.
Overall, "Dancing Through Sunday" presents a bleak view of the inevitability of suffering, and the futility of trying to resist it. By using the metaphor of a dance, the song emphasizes the idea that we are all caught up in the movements of life, with no control over where they take us.
