II" was also released as a single, reaching number 16 on the chart. Sing the Sorrow was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2006 and is AFI's best-selling release, having sold over 1.26 million copies as of September 2009.
AFI's seventh album, Decemberunderground (2006), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and featured the hit single "Miss Murder", which topped the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart and reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another single, "Love Like Winter", reached number four on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album was certified Platinum by the RIAA in 2013.[6] Decemberunderground was followed three years later by Crash Love (2009), and then four years later by Burials (2013); both albums were also successful, peaking at number twelve and number nine, respectively, on the Billboard 200. Then you receive a blank stare
You've got something to say of importance
And gosh that's really good to hear
I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you
I'm proud, I'm very proud of you
I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you
You've got some S.P., something to show to me
Well, I have seen it before
I can't compete, I can't impress you
I guess I'll show you the door
I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you
I'm proud, I'm very proud of you
I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you
I'm proud, I'm very proud of you
I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you
I'm proud, I'm very proud of you
I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you
I'm proud, I'm very proud of you
The lyrics of AFI's song "Consult My Lover" display a sense of disappointment that the singer feels towards his lover. The lover seems to need the singer's validation but receives a blank stare from him. Despite this, the singer tries to encourage the lover that he is proud of them regardless. However, the lover tries to impress the singer by demonstrating their own "S.P." or "something to show to me." But the singer dismisses this competition, realizing that it is futile and decides to end the relationship.
The song paints a picture of a relationship where one partner constantly seeks validation from the other. Meanwhile, the other partner must navigate the delicate balance between honesty and kindness, trying to encourage their lover while avoiding being disingenuous. The chorus of the song, "I'm, I'm proud of you, so proud of you/I'm proud, I'm very proud of you," is ironic in that the singer is trying to be supportive but with little effect. It highlights the fact that sometimes feelings cannot be forced or manufactured, and they need to come naturally.
Overall, "Consult My Lover" provides a unique perspective on the intricacies of relationships. The lyrics convey the difficulties of communication and validation seeking in a relationship, making for a thoughtful and introspective song.
