Correction and fun facts. Aristotle actually studied and worked at Plato's school Akademia for nearly 20 years before leaving for Macedonia and then coming back to Athens again to open his own school. Plato had two nicknames for him. The first was "The Mind" . When Aristotle wasnt at class Plato would say" The Mind is absent and my audience is deaf " . And because Aristotle would often choose to stay at home and study on his own Plato would also refer to him as "The Reader"(he was a huge bookworm since early age . His father was a doctor and Aristotle grew up reading his books.)

Also, Aristotle's Rhetoric and the sophists' rhetoric is not the exact same thing. You can find more info on that googling Aristotle's (or even Plato's) criticism on sophistical rhetoric. :)

@Ariadna Grau you are right, rhetoric as a practice pro-existed of course and so did other scholars like the sophists, but Aristotle wrote three books (which all together are called Rhetoric) which analyze and explain rhetoric and its methods, structure etc. It's a complete treatise (a disquisition) of the theory of rhetoric, consisted of three books, including 60 chapters. A complete theory. Rhetoric was very influencial in this tradition and his analysis on logic and its influence continued in the 19th century. That's why he is called the father of rhetoric , among other things.

love this video. its truly amazing to me how Aristotle born in 384 BC resolved and acknowledged, thoughts and problems we have today in the modern world. I do know that by our efforts and practice we can all be virtuous. Much wisdom i have gained while being a peripatetic. There is so much excess with in society today, that was projected in his teachings, before the high tech, iphone age was even known of. I think it's a conceit of the modern age to assume that those who came before us were somehow less than we are today. Why wouldn't Aristotle have acknowledged the problems of our society and complexity of our thoughts, then attempted to resolve them. (Note: I said "attempted.") I imagine there were plenty of others in cultures all over the world, who lived before Aristotle who also posited the same questions and attempted to resolve them. As we are, today, attempting to do the same as we struggle with the same problems that have always plagued humanity. Just because technology has changed, it doesn't mean human beings have.

I've recently delved into Aristotle's Politics and it's quite encouraging to me to see modern people discussing higher ideas. So far I've read the Art of War, Tao Te Ching, The Prince, Beyond Good and Evil, Anthem, and (as I said) Politics.

Politics has opened my eyes to the political world in ways I never would've conceived of before and that to me is the point of philosophy. To encourage new understanding. Granted some of his views are a bit antiqued (particularly those regarding slavery and the role of women) but it still holds many truths and I'd encourage it. People see me reading it while I'm at work and ask me, 'Oh what college class am I taking'? I answer it's for my own leisure and they seem impressed.

Apologies if this seems long winded, but I find I'm quite short on people to discuss this with.

+duwiDota in terms of utility I can give no concrete examples, but I can say that it's given me insight into politics nowadays.

For example, through this book, I've seen how the Soviet Union collapsed as well as how the American political system functions. The way I saw it, democracy as he examined it drew several parallels to the Democratic Party while his examinations of oligarchies was quite similar to the Republican Party. The flaws in both forms of government are reflected in the parties today.

He said that oligarchies were quite liable to infighting and that holds true today. He said democracies problem was contention between the masses and the 'notables'. Again, quite true.

Furthermore, it seemed like he's predicted the beginning and end of several of histories most nefarious tyrants. 'hence mankind will not, if they can help, endure it, and anyone who obtains power by force or fraud is at once thought to be a tyrant.' Hitler used both means to gain power and was bested.

I like this video.

It makes me sad that other readers of Aristotle's work don't see that we was doing more than writing disconnected musings on different topics. He was creating one body of work; connecting the pieces creates something larger and more complete. He's a very beautiful thinker.

Someone have an explanation for the apparent inversion in tutoring Alexander and going to Athens? I'm pretty sure that Botton know a lot about Aristotle and is hard to believe that he would make a mistake like this. So i suspect that there is new findings in this matter, someone have more information about it?

I had philosophy and sociology at school.
Elective subjects weren't a thing on my country (I think they may have changed it nowadays), but we did have extra classes, which didn't weigh in anything (you couldn't really fail them, because you weren't graded), one of them was history of arts.
I'm glad I had the opportunity to study all of those and even if at the time I was relatively interested in them, I realize now that when I was younger I just didn't give this kind of stuff enough credit or attention.
It's crazy how much more interesting some things are after some years have passed.

Something that many people might appreciate is a recommended reading in the description of each video that is relevant to it. Your videos are somewhat of a summary that piques the interest and leaves me wanting to go more in depth into each topic, however I'm not sure where to start without "homework" from the school of life.

Very useful feedback, thank you. In Aristotle's case, I would recommend diving straight into the Nicomachean Ethics, which is widely available online and otherwise.

Your videos are insightful, witty and charming. I enjoy them a lot, and I would recommend them to my friends. I just find you make them more "pop-philosophy" than actual philosophy.

Aristotle wrote a lot about friendship and virtue, tragedy and rethorics, but this man is credited for the most used and needed tool we nowadays have: logic. His treaties of logic transcendent the human mind in a ways that an ordinary man can't imagine. Average philosophy students hate reading his boring and dry prose, the masses don't know that these things even exist, but the real philosophers devour these works of genius.

In sum, thanks to his work of logic we nowadays have the computer you used to make this video, the internet, and the algoruthms that made YouTube possible.
