Their current lineup consists of Hoffmann, vocalist Mark Tornillo, guitarists Uwe Lulis and Philip Shouse, drummer Christopher Williams and bassist Martin Motnik. Before arriving at their current lineup, Accept has undergone numerous lineup changes, being Hoffmann the last remaining original member since its inception, and he is the only band member to appear on each album.
Accept played an important role in the development of speed and thrash metal, and they were part of the German heavy metal scene, which emerged in the early to mid-1980s. They have also been cited as an influence or inspiration by a number of acts, including Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Testament, Anthrax, Guns N' Roses, Mötley Crüe, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Overkill, Exodus, and Annihilator, as well as fellow Germans such as Helloween, Blind Guardian, Doro, Sodom, Rage, and Grave Digger. Accept achieved its first commercial success with their fifth studio album Balls to the Wall (1983), which is the band's only album to be certified gold in the United States and Canada, and spawned their well-known hit "Balls to the Wall".
Accept have broken up and reformed multiple times. They first split up in 1989, several months after the release of Eat the Heat (which was their only album with Dirkschneider's initial replacement David Reece), but reformed in 1992 and released three more albums before disbanding again in 1997. After briefly reuniting in 2005, Accept announced their third reunion in 2009, with former T.T. Quick frontman Mark Tornillo replacing Dirkschneider (who declined to participate), and the band has recorded five albums with him: Blood of the Nations (2010), Stalingrad (2012), Blind Rage (2014), The Rise of Chaos (2017) and Too Mean to Die (2021); each of those albums renewed Accept's popularity in Germany and entered the top ten charts there.

How Do We Sleep
Accept Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When all the words are spoken, and the silence runs astray?
The thoughts have all been written down, the pen is laid aside
Do you feel your mind at peace, or do you feel as though you've died?
It's a war of truth and lies, a search for right and wrong
Who will fall and who will rise, the battle rages on
With the world around us going to hell
Tell me, how do we justify?
We do nothing, nothing changes at all
In a thousand years from now, the winners they will be praised
The history books will all be burned, that told of other ways
So when tomorrow morning comes, to bring another day
We'd better test our mettle, before we fade away
When good men stop and stand aside, the evil ones succeed
They take for granted all we've done, and watch the planet bleed
Oooh, so how do we sleep at night?
With the world around us going to hell
Tell me, how do we justify?
We do nothing, nothing changes at all
Who will fall and who will rise, a search for right and wrong
It's a war of truth and lies, the battle's raging on
Oooh, how do we sleep at night?
With the world around us going to hell
Tell me, how do we justify?
We do nothing, and nothing changes at all
The lyrics to Accept's song "How Do We Sleep" delve into the existential struggle individuals face when confronted with the state of the world and their own inaction. The song questions how one can find solace and peace of mind in a world filled with chaos and injustice. The opening lines pose the question of what to say when there's nothing left to say, when all the words have been spoken and silence lingers. It suggests that perhaps all thoughts have been written down, leaving one feeling stagnant and empty, like their mind has died.
The lyrics then describe the ongoing battle between truth and lies, the constant search for what is right and wrong. The winners of this battle may be praised in the future, but at the cost of erasing history and alternative perspectives. The song emphasizes the importance of testing one's mettle and standing up before fading away into obscurity. It laments how good men often step aside, allowing the evil ones to succeed and take advantage of their achievements, leading to the destruction of the planet.
In the chorus, the lyrics ask how one can sleep at night when the world is falling apart, questioning how individuals can justify their inaction. The repetition of "nothing changes at all" highlights the frustration of witnessing the world deteriorate while lacking the drive to make a difference.
In essence, "How Do We Sleep" serves as a commentary on apathy, complacency, and the moral dilemmas individuals face in the face of global turmoil. It prompts listeners to reflect on their own actions, urging them to take a stand and fight against injustice, rather than idly watching the world crumble.
