Heavily influenced by his idol, Elvis Presley, and the 1950s rock revolution, he is also known as the most famous dancer of the Hula hoop fad. For the last 40 years he has retained his popularity in Italy, selling millions of records and appearing in numerous TV shows and movies (including a short appearance in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, before becoming a famous artist). In the latter respect, he has also been a creator of a comic genre, with his characteristic walking and his facial expressions. For the most part, his films were commercially successful, in fact in the 1970s and part of the 1980s, he was the king of the Italian box office in low budget movies. As an actor, critics point to Serafino (1968), directed by Pietro Germi, as his best effort.
As a director he frequently casts Ornella Muti, Eleonora Giorgi and his wife Claudia Mori. His best movie like director is "Yuppi Du", winner of The Golden Palm at Cannes Festival. He and Claudia are the parents of Rosita, Rosalinda and Vincent Celentano, the latter most notable to worldwide audiences for playing the Satan character in Mel Gibson`s The Passion of the Christ. He also works often as a host for several Italian television shows.
His 1968 song "Azzurro" has regained popularity in 2006, due to it being the anthem of the Italian national football team (the Azzurri) who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The artist Vincent Fiorello has also created a remix of the song.
His last concert-event in 2012, after 18 years without live performances, was transmitted on Canale 5, with over 9 million viewers both evenings.

Quel giorno sul monte:
"Mio Padre e' il Padrone
Di tulle le cose.
E' inutile che voi
Vi affanniate
A volere comprare
Con l'oro la gioia
I primi del mondo,
Per poi far luccicar
I vostri brillanti
Sul volto di chi
Di chi muore di fame
Di chi muore di fame
Di chi muore di fame.
Cosa serve possedere
Nche tutta la terra
Anche tutta la terra,
Se poi della tua vita
Il padronenon sei
Neanche solo di una dei capelli
Che tu porti in testa,
Perche' anche di quelli
Un giorno dovrai
Render conto a mio Padre,
Che e il Padrone di tutto
Di tutte le cose".
Hoo!... hoo!...
Hoo!... hoo!...
Disse:
"Voi ricchi pensate
Di avere ogni cosa
E vi vantate
Che niente vi manca.
Ma non sapete
Che miserabili
E meschini voi siete.
Siete poveri e ciechi
E piu' nudi dei vermi.
Ma se alcuno di voi
La mia voce udira'
Perche' dietro alla porta picchio.
E lui mi aprira',
Entrero' per cenare,
Per cenare con lui,
Affinche' quand'egli bussera'
Alla Casa del Padre mio,
Il Padrone non scordi
Di colui che mi apri
E lo lasci fuori dalla Porta
Perche' egli non veda
Lo splendore celeste
Dova mai morira'
Dova mai morira'
Dova mai morira'
Hoo!... hoo!...
Hoo!... hoo!...
Hoo!... hoo!...
Hoo!... hoo!...

In Adriano Celentano's song "Disse," the singer reflects on a conversation he had on a mountain, where he heard a message about the true ownership of all things. The message was that God is the master of all things, and people waste their time striving to accumulate wealth and become the top of the world. The singer reminds the rich and powerful that having possessions means nothing, because they cannot own their lives, not even a single strand of hair on their heads. He speaks to these people, telling them that they are poor and blind, and lower than worms because they do not understand the true nature of things. They are invited to hear the singer's voice knocking at their doors, and those who open it will be shown the true path and will be invited to dine with the singer. This invitation was made so that when visitors come knocking at the door of the singer's father, the master of all things, he would remember the one who opened his door and assisted the singer.
The lyrics of "Disse" are largely based on the ideas of the Biblical teachings. It preaches about the accumulation of worldly treasures and the true nature of being rich. Celentano's lyrics also speak to the idea that material possessions can never bring true happiness, and it is only by giving what we have to those who have not that we can find some measure of joy. The song is like a preaching tool, using a gentle, soothing melody to convey its message, while still being forceful and impactful.
