Very different Alanis Morissette; from the dancing and up-tempo pop music to sitting on bar-stools with a guitar playing laid-back-slow tempo music. I didn't know she can dance and be sassy (a fan wouldn't get that inclination by the way she appears to the public now), great maturation by the artist as one gets older.

Alot of people ask if Alanis was a sell out, well its interesting cause I don't think she is at all. It's obvious from following her career that I believe she had 'pushy' stage parents. Always sending her off to auditions for shows and music from a young age because they recognised she had talent. She won a TV talent show at 13 in 87 and then through the period of 88-90 worked with older music producers who controlled her career along with encouragement from her parents, eventually winning a two album contract deal. She released those albums in 91 and 92 which was the 86-92 dance/pop genre. It was around 93 after the commercial failure of the second album that her contract ended. At this stage, to have been dropped when you have been brought up with high expectations must have been painful. She still had the desire for music and was encouraged to move to Toronto and then LA where she worked with Glenn This happened over a two year period from 93-95. She was able to write in her style, auto bigraphical and how she wanted it. The result was JLP and the Alanis we have today. One of the primary reasons why Alanis hasn't re-released the first two albums is that the albums were contractually controlled by those older producers from 88-93. They would financially benefit, I'm sure alanis wouldn't want that especially if they took advantage of her.

Nope. Not even close! Her parents would have been just as happy if she DIDN'T get involved in the entertainment industry.

She did TV when she was a preteen (You Can't Do That on Television) and released her first self written music when she was ten! (with her own money!!!). This is what SHE wanted to do, all on her own!

She was not encouraged to go anywhere (she moved of her own volition) and no one pushed her to do her first two albums the way she did. In fact, she had almost total artistic control of her career from start to finish!

If Alanis had kept doing this kind of music, she would have been long forgotten. This genre of pop was only popular in the very late 80s and early 90s. She literally went grunge at the exact right moment. This music was dead by 1995 and the boy bands were just starting up. Another album like this would have been terrible for her career. This is the kind of music you hear on the Cold As Ice soundtrack and it was only popular very briefly. It was super cool for about 2-3 years max and then it got really cheesy fast. I enjoy it for nostalgic reasons, but she wouldn’t be remembered as a great artist in 2023 if she hadn’t jumped on the grunge train. She would have been too old after 1995 to do the Britney/Christina thing and it never really suited her. To me, watching these videos, she looks very young and trapped. Dave Coulier is a prick, but he did inspire some classic music. At this point, she was basically following a trend that was on the way out.

I hear you. When I heard she had two albums previous to Jagged little pill, I did some "research" (wikipedia *click* - "ah thanks"). Those two were only released in Canada, and apparently she and her new label decided to take them off the market and 'never speak of it again' in order to set her new image. It's a bit of a shame, I'd love to get my hands on those albums, if only just to complete the collection. Ye gotta love that 80s sound, though I do think her later music is infinitely better.

Most artists have a different start to when they find their actual sound. Alanis did a great job with her first albums.

This is still not the Alanis persona cause it has a LindaRonstadt/Cher flavour to it. This is, however, still the Michael Jackson band. He should not have gone home that night or to a bar. Alanis/Marnie Nixon still wanted to compose music so she did it without him. It definitely had the MJ flavour in there. It is like France Gall. She was hanging around David Bowie and when she composed the song, "regret" ...or regresse...whatever...the audience can feel the David Bowie influence.

It's like, Alanis, you just need to copy Mariah Carey. These pants suits and feminist fashion statements make you look like a weekend bar band who barely cares if they have a brand to market.
