Hand In My Pocket
Alanis Morissette Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm broke but I'm happy, I'm poor but I'm kind
I'm short but I'm healthy, yeah
I'm high but I'm grounded, I'm sane but I'm overwhelmed
I'm lost but I'm hopeful, baby
And what it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be fine, fine, fine
'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five

I feel drunk but I'm sober, I'm young and I'm underpaid
I'm tired but I'm working, yeah
I care but I'm restless, I'm here but I'm really gone
I'm wrong and I'm sorry, baby

And what it all comes down to
Is that everything's gonna be quite alright
'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is flicking a cigarette

And what it all comes down to
Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet
'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a peace sign

I'm free but I'm focused, I'm green but I'm wise
I'm hard but I'm friendly, baby
I'm sad but I'm laughing, I'm brave but I'm chicken shit
I'm sick but I'm pretty, baby

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one's really got it figured out just yet
But I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano

And what it all comes down to, my friends, yeah
Is that everything is just fine, fine, fine

'Cause I've got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxi cab

Overall Meaning

In "Hand in My Pocket," Alanis Morissette reflects on the duality of human emotions and abilities. The lyrics describe conflicting emotions and experiences, but Morissette ultimately communicates that everything will be fine in the end. She begins by stating that although she is broke and poor, she is happy and kind. Similarly, she is high but grounded, and sane but overwhelmed. She acknowledges that she is lost, but still hopeful. Essentially, these lyrics are about the paradoxical nature of life and the human experience. Alternatively, Morissette addresses personal inconsistencies where she claims to be drunk but sober, young and underpaid, and tired but working. Nevertheless, she acknowledges her restlessness and disconnect between the present and past states of being. She's also sending a message that life presents you with many situations - some make you happy, while some make you sad. And to weather through these situations, you need to stay grounded and keep your head up.

The chorus affirms the idea that everything will be okay, despite these conflicting feelings, thanks to her outlook and personal strength. Her hand in her pocket represents her internal power that helps her navigate through life's ups and downs. Additionally, the other one giving a high-five, flicking a cigarette, giving a peace sign, and hailing a taxi cab represents how she interacts with the world around her. The final verse suggests that not everything is figured out yet and life is still a work in progress; she can be free and focused, hard and friendly, and sad but still laughing. Lastly, the line "And what it all comes down to, my friends, yeah, is that everything is just fine, fine, fine" strongly delivers the thematic punchline of the song.

I'm so grateful to have directed this music video for Alanis all those years back. The concept was her idea and Liz Gazzano (the producer) and Sterling Storm (the art director) and I all made it happen. It was difficult, but a joy. And Alanis was amazing to work with. An inspired young artists to say the least. Thank you Alanis for such a great song.

Crabtron although it sounds crazy to see Mark Kohr himself commenting on thins video and no one reacting to it, it looks like you are indeed using this alias on social networks, so why not! You said too much to stop here, we need more details now! For example, I noticed two of Alanis musicians from that era make short appearances in this video, have I missed the others?

Mark Kohr, is this really you? This video is still amazing. I have always loved it.

@@Brad772006 It is me. Thanks so much. It's great looking back on this video now. It's amazing how so many of the themes are still relevant. Thank you for appreciating it. Best Regards.

There will never be a decade in music like the 90’s. There was soul in every genre and there was a song from every genre in the top 40.

Absolutely correct

Being 24 now and working in a workshop that plays all the old songs from 90s through to early 2000s. I can agree with you on that one, man I remember watching Foo Fighters pretender as a kid that was insane.
