In 1960, he started in music with Gibraltarian band 'The Diamond Boys', which had no real commercial success, but played a part in Spain's introduction to popular music. In 1966 Hammond co-founded the British vocal group The Family Dogg, scoring a UK Top 10 hit with "A Way of Life" in 1969. He is probably best known for his early 70s hits "It Never Rains In Southern California" and 'Free Electric Band' - but he went on to write countless hits for other artists such as Madonna and Leo Sayer. In 1987, Hammond's composition with Diane Warren "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" (recorded by Jefferson Starship) was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy. In 1988, Hammond won an Emmy Award for the song "One Moment in Time", a song he wrote along with John Bettis. In 2008, Hammond was inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He is immortalised in song by Half Man Half Biscuit in their 1986 track "Albert Hammond Bootleg".
His son, Albert Hammond, Jr., is a guitarist in The Strokes.

Comprenderte
Albert Hammond Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Con cuántas ganas me hiciste sonreír
Entre mis brazos sentía aquel calor
Que tú me dabas
Yo me creía que era tanta la emoción
Y te besaba sin poderme contener
Pero no pude engañar mi corazón
Comprenderte
No es difícil
Complacerte
Ya lo sé
Conquistarte
Ya lo hice
El misterio es no poderte conocer
A veces pienso que me tengo que arriesgar
Por un instante sentirme más feliz
Y entretener sin compasión mi soledad
Con la mentira
Pero no quiero imaginarme el dolor
Que sentíría mi corazón después
Si tengo miedo poderme equivocar
Quiero con calma pensármelo otra vez
Comprenderte
No es difícil
Complacerte
Ya lo sé
Conquistarte
Ya lo hice
El misterio es no poderte conocer
Comprenderte
No es difícil
Complacerte
Ya lo sé
Conquistarte
Ya lo hice
El misterio es no poderte conocer
Comprenderte
No es difícil...
The song "Comprenderte" by Albert Hammond is about a man who meets a woman and is enamoured with her. He embraces her warmth and basks in the pleasure that she provides. However, he realizes that he cannot deceive his own heart, and his feelings are transient. The singer is conscious of his own emotions and is cautious of getting hurt. He fears making a mistake and having to deal with the pain of heartbreak. He recognizes that he has to be patient and take his time to evaluate his true feelings before moving forward.
The chorus of the song, where the artist repeats the phrase "Comprenderte, no es difícil" ("understanding you, it's not difficult"), emphasizes the difficulty of fully comprehending another person. Even though the singer has strong feelings for the woman, he acknowledges that there's a whole world to explore with her that he hasn't yet discovered. The artist implies that no matter how deeply we feel for someone else, there will always be a mystery to uncover about them, and this potential unknown is what the singer fears.
Hammond wrote "Comprenderte" in Spanish, even though he is an English artist. The song was originally released in 1983, but it remained popular in Latin America because it's a quintessential love song.
