Alceu Valenca was born in countryside Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil. He is considered the most successful artist in achieving an aesthetic balance between traditional northeastern Brazilian music and a broad range of electronic sounds and effects from pop music. One can find traces of maracatu, coco and "repentes de viola" (improvising fast-paced Brazilian folk music) in most of his songs. Alceu was able to utilize the electric guitar the electric bass, and lately even a synthesizer was added to his broad scope of musical instruments.
Because of that, Alceu was able to recreate Northeastern traditional music, like baiao, coco, toada, maracatu, frevo, caboclinhos, embolada and repentes: all sung with a sometimes rock sometimes alternative sounding music background. His music and his themes are intangible, universal and unlimited. However, his aesthetic basis is genuinely Brazilian Northeastern music.

Tu vens chegando pra brincar no meu quintal
No teu cavalo peito nu, cabelo ao vento
E o Sol quarando nossas roupas no varal
Na bruma leve das paixões que vêm de dentro
Tu vens chegando pra brincar no meu quintal
No teu cavalo peito nu, cabelo ao vento
E o Sol quarando nossas roupas no varal
Tu vens, tu vens
Eu já escuto os teus sinais
Tu vens, tu vens
Eu já escuto os teus sinais
A voz de um anjo sussurrou no meu ouvido
E eu não duvido já escuto os teus sinais
Que tu virias numa manhã de domingo
Eu te anuncio nos sinos das catedrais
Tu vens, tu vens
Eu já escuto os teus sinais
Tu vens, tu vens
Eu já escuto os teus sinais
Tomara meu Deus, tomara
Que tudo que nos separa
Não frutifique, não valha
Tomara, meu Deus
Tomara meu Deus, tomara
Que tudo que nos amarra
Só seja amor, malha rara
Tomara, meu Deus
Tomara meu Deus, tomara
E o nosso amor se declara
Muito maior, e não para em nós
Se as águas da Guanabara
Escorrem na minha cara
Uma nação solidária não para em nós
Tomara meu Deus, tomara
Uma nação solidária
Sem preconceitos, tomara
Uma nação como nós
Salve a nação tropical brasileira
Salve o povo de tupi
Salve a nação tropical brasileira
Todos os caboclinhos
Todos os maracatus
Todos os afoxés
Salve o povo de roda e ciranda
Salve a música popular brasileira, ei
The lyrics to Alceu Valença's song "Pot-Pourri: Anunciação/Tomara" speak of love, passion, and hope. In the first verse, the singer describes a lover who arrives at their backyard riding a horse, with his chest bare and hair flowing in the wind. This imagery creates a sense of freedom and wildness. The sun dries their clothes hanging on the clothesline, symbolizing the intensity of their connection.
The chorus emphasizes the anticipation and recognition of the lover's arrival. The singer hears their signals and knows they are coming. The voice of an angel whispers in their ear, confirming that the lover will come on a Sunday morning. The singer announces this in the bells of the cathedrals, symbolizing the significance and sacredness of their love.
The second part of the song shifts its focus to broader themes. The singer expresses their hopes and wishes for a better world. They pray that everything that separates us will not bear fruit and that only love remains. They hope that the barriers and prejudices that hold society back will be overcome. The mention of the Guanabara waters running down their face symbolizes the sorrow and struggles faced by the nation. They long for a united and accepting society, free from prejudice.
