Victory Lap
All That Remains Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, there's no more big time
No more bright lights
Just a guy who's drinking alone tonight
Shoulda walked back your mouth
Knocked you off your high horse
With all that worthless advice you endorse

Lost the limelight you were about
What's it like to gradually fade out
Used to tear it all down, now you're tearing all up
Got 'em drippin' in your whiskey at the brass mug

I've heard it all before
The murmurs and the whispers
I don't listen anymore

Every time I rise, you fall away
It's the same story day after day
You're voice is like poison
You can't be me
Every time I rise, you fall away
Fall away

Nothin's lost, we just don't abuse it
We're seven deep, we been caught up writing hits
Now you whine, cry, bitch, moan, say it's a waste
Sing along while I give you a taste

(Yeah, here's to you and your favorite band
Yeah, they suck too
I hear your cries to the one you know you idolize)

I've heard it all before
The murmurs and the whispers
I don't listen anymore

Every time I rise, you fall away
It's the same story day after day
You're voice is like poison
You can't be me
Every time I rise, you fall away
(Fall away)

Keep tellin' those tall tales, and I'll call you out

(I'll call you out)
(I'll call you out)

Every time I rise you fall away

(All those worthless years, they're fading away)

Every time I rise you fall away
It's the same story day after day
You're voice is like poison
You can't be me
Every time I rise, you fall away

(Fall away)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to All That Remains's song Victory Lap speak of the frustration of an artist who has lost his fame and fortune, and now finds himself drinking alone. The song is written in the form of a message to his former fans, who seem to have abandoned him in his hour of need. The first verse takes a tone of bitterness towards a person who gave him "worthless advice" before he lost his fame. He calls out this person for being hypocritical, as they themselves have not achieved anything close to his level of success. The second verse continues to rail against those who now criticize him, pointing out that they are consumed by jealousy and that he does not pay attention to their murmurs anymore. He concludes the song by stating that every time he rises, they fall away - meaning, that they can't keep up with his success.

The song is a reflection of the band's own experiences with fame and stardom, as All That Remains was once considered one of the hottest metal bands around. Victory Lap was written during a time when the band's popularity was waning, and they were no longer able to sell out stadiums and arenas as easily as they used to. Nevertheless, the song has an empowering message, and speaks to the band's resilience in the face of adversity.

@Curtis so tired of the people bitching about the later albums. They have their own appeal and I can appreciate that. The first two albums were never really my thing, but I never bitched about them taking up two records. This band has provided something for everyones taste and I think that deserves it’s own merit. Some days I’m feeling the more radio friendly songs, some days I’m feeling TFOI stuff. Other days I want the in between albums like Overcome and FWAM. Not many bands can cover that range for me. I say more power to them.

Not really an ATR fan but mad respect to the drummer for using traditional grip in a heavy band.

Curtis

This shit is not heavy.

NIUHOY

All the comment meant is it’s not soft rock or pop or garage or folk or roots or indie. Maybe “heavy-ish” is more apropos.

Curtis

@NIUHOY 10/4. Understood. Copy that. I need some angry 💩 though like The Fall Of Ideals.
