They signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records in 2004. Their debut album, Into the Rush, debuted at number 36 on the US Billboard 200, and was later certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[4] It has sold 839,000 copies domestically and one million copies worldwide. Their second album, Insomniatic, peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200, selling over 39,000 copies in its first week and becoming Aly & AJ's highest debut to date.

In 2009, Aly & AJ renamed themselves 78violet and officially announced their departure from Hollywood Records the following year. In 2013, the sisters released their first single in five years, "Hothouse". The duo had planned to release a full-length album in 2014, which was later leaked onto the internet during summer 2014. On December 9, 2015, the duo announced they had decided to return to their original name, Aly & AJ. Since then, the duo has been working on new music.

On June 2, 2017, they announced a new single titled "Take Me".[8][9] It serves as the lead single from their EP, Ten Years. The single was released on August 18, 2017.

It honestly upsets me how much Disney didn’t help launch these girls’ career as much as they did for Miley, Demi, and Selena. In my opinion, Aly & AJ are collectively more talented than all of them but for some reason they weren’t given the same opportunities as those girls. They write all their own music, play instruments, and sing. It’s not like they were actors who just decided they wanted to be singers too. I️ hope their new music gets them the recognition they’ve deserved all these years

I saw them live Thursday night. They play every instrument, write every song and they have amazing range across their catalogue. If you have never seen them live go to their tour in 2023 and pay extra for VIP. I did and I don't regret getting almost ten minutes to talk with them. It was amazing.

Alyson Michalka was the best thing to happen to Disney. She was hired for a simple side-character role in Phil of the Future, then it just so happens she is an INCREDIBLE singer (honestly probably the best artist Disney has had) and her and her sister had this INSANE awesome band with unparalleled songwriting and production... like, how does that happen? This was definitely one of the best times of my childhood. I use to sing all their songs and have their CD. From 1:40 to 1:48 is like the best moment of the song. So much damn power in their voices! ❤️🙌🏾

it was their name, they changed it back to aly&aj in late 2015 and they are releasing a new album this year. It's almost finished. Im so excited it's finally happening! :D
