Joan of Arc on the Dance Floor

Every time we step out of the shadows
People pass by, always onto the next
With a dead heart, yeah, they're full of regret
They got sad eyes, empty promises
We don't need 'em
Until mascara's on the dance floor
We say, "No"
Joan of Arc is on the dance floor
At the stake, we don't fight the flames
Are you born in vain if you die your savior?
People pass by, always onto the next
With a dead heart, yeah, they're full of regret
They got sad eyes, empty promises
We don't stop
Until mascara's on the dance floor
We say, "No"
Joan of Arc is on the dance floor
Knights in armor hide under eyeliner
Lights are low, the night will take us higher, higher
We don't stop
We say, "No"
We don't stop
Until mascara's on the dance floor (we don't stop)
We say, "No"
Joan of Arc is on the dance floor
Knights in armor hide under eyeliner
Lights are low, the night will take us higher, higher
The song "Joan of Arc on the Dance Floor" is a tribute to the French heroine who fought for what she believed in, even if it meant going against the norm. In this song, Aly and AJ outline their own journey of standing up for what they believe in and not conforming to societal expectations. The lyric "Every night we walk the line, every time we step out of the shadows" conveys the idea of going against the norm and taking a stand. The lyrics go on to describe people with empty hearts and promises and how the sisters don't need them. They don't stop until mascara is on the dance floor, referring to their commitment to their beliefs and fighting for them.
The line "At the stake, we don't fight the flames, are you born in vain if you die your saviour?" is a reference to Joan of Arc's death by burning at the stake. The sisters are comparing their fight for what they believe in to Joan of Arc's, and questioning the worth of life if one doesn't fight for their beliefs.
Throughout the song, there's a feeling of empowerment and rebellion. This is depicted by the line "Knights in armor hide under eyeliner, lights are low, the night will take us higher, higher," which portrays the idea of breaking free from traditional gender roles and expressing themselves freely without fear of judgment.

Most people donβt realize that this whole video from the grainy black and white and subtitles to the crowns and costumes is a direct homage to βthe passion of Joan of Arcβ a classic art film from the silent era that critiqued political injustice of the time. So smart. So poignant right now.
Seth Cosier
What a terrible understanding of what that film was trying to accomplish
abby burke
It really wasnβt political though. It was just depicting the life and execution of St. Joan of Arc which is a fascinating story by itself.
