Genessaret
Anathallo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We looked hard;
I stood on the bottom.

Calloused tiptoes,
Splintering wood,
Waterlogging.

Break up, come back together. Genessaret.

I want to skip like a stone from a stronger arm.
Each one I throw is moving somewhere.

Oh, let me go.
I will go out, out, out, out
Past these yellow ropes.
I am not afraid.

They sway there like
The shredded ones hung
From my parents' tree
Where I pumped my legs
And I broke into sweat.

I never saw my face
In the bird bath mirror,
Red as blood
And I was tired.

For a minute short, there was a wonder.
A sense after the momentary weird blur,
In the space of expectancy
When you wake,
When you open your eyes.

When you expect to see the same thing that
You've seen. First, the ceiling:
Grey from great oak.
Grey from great oak.
He'd thrown his net over us.
(Stringy hands, stained glass)

And all his sounds, the same today.
But my body changed.
Something in the salty sheets
Was pressing in on me.

Stuck and stinging, I keep rolling.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Anathallo's "Genessaret (Going Out Over 30,000 Fathoms of Water)" paint a vivid picture of a challenging physical experience, likely involving swimming or diving. The singer describes their calloused toes and the feeling of splintering wood, suggesting they are standing on a boat or dock. The waterlogging emphasizes the weightiness and saturation of this immersion. The repeated phrase "break up, come back together" evokes the shifting motions of waves, as well as a potential personal struggle.

The singer then alludes to the Biblical location of "Genessaret," which is also called the Sea of Galilee. This ancient site was known for its fishing and miracles performed by Jesus, which could tie in to the net imagery later in the song. The singer wants to "skip like a stone from a stronger arm," a metaphor for being launched into something greater with a sense of purpose. The yellow ropes may symbolize boundaries or limitations, but the singer is unafraid to push past them. The description of "shredded ones" hung from the parents' tree could suggest either old clothes or even people who were lynched, which could add a darker dimension to the singer's desire to escape past experiences.

Some brilliant progressions going on here. I was born in Mount Pleasant and crossed paths we these guys. Funny thing is, I was in a band around the same time they were starting up. We sucked and I thought these guys were brilliant. I believe they did kind of release a demo album called Sparrows, and I think this song was on there. In my head I predicted they would be successful in some way, but so many I knew thought they were no good because they weren't traditional rock. Who cares? That's not what they were trying to do. Very unique, very cool.
