People like me walk out the door,
We'll pull you out into the streets
Of far off countries. If I'm ready to go,
How could I let you dwell in delight?
Oh see, all things are so bright and spiritual.
These seeds are growing in extraordinary colors.
It's cased in light.
Don't you worry about me, I'm gone.
Don't you worry about me.
I'm off in a distant place
Where I can be the signifier,
Not that which is signified.
The referent, convincing us (you and me both),
For you, my smile is like bow, bow, bow, bow.
Out here there is no 'under the skin.'
And the form of every other
Is hidden under covers.
Let us sleep
In ease of dark.
We couldn't rest
With this sense of duty hanging off of our chests.
Peeled away, we had to get back from where the
Grip of our hands could lift us from the failures
In the eyes of men, to form our scales and weigh
Our words, good again.
To form our scales in the eyes of men,
To weigh our words
And make ourselves good again.
The opening lines of "Hoodwink" by Anathallo, "Someday they will build monuments for us," suggest that the singer and their companions are doing something historically significant, perhaps even heroic. It's clear that the singer is leaving something behind, literally walking out the door, and heading to a far-off country. While they seem excited about this adventure, they also feel guilty about leaving someone behind to "dwell in delight."
The following lines are a bit more abstract, with the singer describing "seeds growing in extraordinary colors" and something "cased in light." They seem to be convinced of something, but it's not quite clear what. The second verse continues this theme of separation, with the singer saying they are in a place where they can be the signifier and not the signified, where they can convince people with their smile.
The third verse is the most poetic and enigmatic, with lines like "Out here there is no 'under the skin.'" It seems to suggest that the singer has left behind the superficial trappings of society and is now experiencing something more raw and real. They are able to sleep in ease of dark, without the weight of duty on their chests. The final lines emphasize their desire to make themselves good again, to form their scales and weigh their words. Overall, the song seems to be about leaving behind the expectations and pressures of society and discovering something more authentic and meaningful.

I'm so glad Invalids references another band in each of their songs. If it weren't for one Invalids song referencing "Couldn't rest with this sense of duty hanging off our chests" I would never have found this. Pretty grateful for that.
@chosentonessournotes
This is one of those songs that just reaches into your chest and touches you in a way you've never felt before. You are brought on a journey through melodies and notes, a roller coaster of happy, ethereal sounding portions, with a mix of some rather dark, foreboding sections. It is truly amazing how they were able to write something this amazing.

You explained this song perfectly.

Haven't listened to this album in over 6 years. One of my favorite songs on this album; instrumental and vocal that blends perfectly together. Best part beginning at :54 seconds and then completely fills yours soul at 1:16 with the claps, drums, and vocals. Rainbow of emotions in this song swallowing you whole... Absolutely beautiful.
