The first verse of Andrés Landero's "Mi Machete" describes the condition of the land, with the burnt earth anticipating the opportunity for sowing after the arrival of rainfall. The joy of the singer, Miguel, is apparent as he celebrates the current year, which is not a leap year, and presumably marks a time of good fortune. The troja, or harvest, with its transplant, is also doing well. Miguel's thoughts are fixed on the tobacco plants that fill the canei with their green leaves, exemplifying the hard work of the farmer.
In the second verse, Miguel introduces himself as a man of poverty who has been working since childhood. However, his fate is altered by a sudden May rainfall, thus demonstrating how small changes can have a significant impact on the lives of those who live off the land. Miguel advises his friend to wake up early, tend to the garden, and plant more so that the harvest yields a good result, to which the rich, miserly man who deceives him would not liken. The last verse reflects on how the individual's own desires can adversely impact their future generations while making one lose sight of what is essential.
Overall, "Mi Machete" tells a story of a farmer's hard work, their appreciation for even minor changes in the climate, and how their fortunes can be impacted by both the environment and the people around them.
