Pro Patria
Ankara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Kuinka sanoin voisin ilmaista
tässä maailmassa
jossa kieli on vain
täytettä tyhjyydelle
kuinka paljon sinua vihaan
Elän sinisessä kylässä
vaan jossa vapaina
vain pilvet taivaan
rajoillasi kahlitset
sen joka vapautta rakastaa

Sinä köytät minut aseeseen
pyydät vuoksesi kuolemaan
käsket edessäsi nöyrtymään
ja tuonelle kumartumaan
Minä sinulle nauran
on sydämeni vihaa
täynnä kuten maljani
jota en edestäsi vuodata

Marssivien jalkojen alla
tuhotaan se mitä kodiksi sanotaan
turhaan
uskoen harhaan
se on Pro Patria
Vaikka rakastan
pelkään
vaikka uhkaat
en näe
myrskypilviä sun taivaallas

Kiskoilla kohti toisiamme
kuljemme
törmäämme
räjähdämme sirpaleina
tuhansina taivaisiin
Vaan jos minut näet
edessäsi juoksevan

lupaan sen
joudankin helvettiin

Overall Meaning

In Ankara's song "Pro Patria," the singer is struggling to express the depth of their hatred towards something or someone in a world where language only fills voids. The singer lives in a blue village where only the clouds in the sky are truly free, but they are restricted within the borders of their world. This oppressiveness reflects in the singer's feelings of being used as a weapon, commanded to die, and forced to submit and bow to death.

Despite being full of anger and hatred towards the subject of their words, the singer refuses to spill their heart like a cup that would pour over. They recognize how they are being manipulated to attack what many people call "home," but they see it as pointless destruction, fueled by false beliefs. The phrase "Pro Patria" is used, which means "for one's country," but in this context, it is with a bitter tone as the singer acknowledges that they fear the destructive consequences of their actions.

The song evokes a sense of desperation, pain, and even a nihilistic perspective. The lyrics suggest a metaphorical conflict between different nations, societies, or individuals, with an apparent sense of hopelessness and destruction that follows. The repetition of the phrase "kuinka" ("how" in English) emphasizes the inability to express feelings, which further highlights the complexity of the issue. Ultimately, the final line indicates that the singer would run towards their oppressor even if it leads them to hell.

Funny how the one player guessed you were Britain just because it was doing well.

As far as if deliberate draws being in the spirit of the game, there is an aspect of Diplomacy being a role playing game as well, and it is in the spirit of that aspect of the game, as well as the meta of if you keep an alliance, it will be easier to make alliances in future games, which is not quite in the spirit of the game, but may also be necessary in closer groups

FloridaMan Diplomacy

He made the guess, and I cringed a little... although it was flattering, in a way. Whenever I'm in an anonymous game, people like Big Gun who know me often guess who I am, but people who just know me by reputation or by my channel rarely do.

That's all fairly true. I think the role playing aspect for me is usually in part that I'm pretending that I'm a great Khan planning my conquest of the world.

Günther Bedson

Hey FloridaMan, that's a succinct and accurate video of this game. Well done! Its been a few months since I last played. I had a string of solos but also a few games where I agreed (as in this game) on two-way draws. That led me to believe I'm ultimately burned out as a player because I no longer have the killer instinct. I hope you continue to enjoy the game. For now, I'm out. Cheers, Big Gun

FloridaMan Diplomacy

Hi Gun, I tried to make sure I kept it reasonably fair and accurate as much as possible, since I made this video without interviewing any of the players involved to get other perspectives. You absolutely kicked my butt, so it's hard for me to say you've lost your killer instinct totally. But if it's not so fun for you to pursue the solo anymore, I hope that's something that will come back after a break. You're definitely still one of the toughest competitors out there, my friend.
Peace, FloridaMan

Sleepy Snake

It is nice to see more of the Versaille variant. I think not going for the solo is against the spirit of the game. However I think it is okay for people to choose not to.

FloridaMan Diplomacy

I'm glad you agree. I felt like people might be missing it a little. And that pretty well captures my feeling, too.

Sol System

I don't know if it's in accordance with how I play the game but, being able to disentangle from your enemies and turn on a dime to halt the advance of and destroy alliance players is a big part of the game imo. The fact that some people will do this is an important part of the diplomatic landscape in that it changes the calculations for other people. There is a chance that big power actually will work with you, etc

FloridaMan Diplomacy

That's a very good point. The objection I felt in my mind was more of a reflection on my own thinking than anything else.

Mr. Bardsman

Personally, I think it depends a bit. I could see a two way draw in Versailles as somewhat reasonable, since I have done this before, remaining satisfied simply knowing that I was in the position to win and had all but done that, and rewarding a loyal ally with survival at the end…

If it’s not ranked. But that’s just me.

FloridaMan Diplomacy

I myself have never been in a two way draw in Versailles; it's very difficult to achieve it naturally without someone conceding that they've lost, which most of us stubborn Diplomacy players will not (which is why this game went on quite a long time after it was apparent who was winning).

It was a ranked game, and interestingly enough, Big Gun has pointed out before that his rating on PlayDiplomacy is high enough that taking a two way draw generally lowers it rather than raising it.
