The Girl from Ipanema
Antônio Carlos Jobim Lyrics

Mais cheia de graça
É ela menina
Que vem e que passa
Num doce balanço
A caminho do mar
Moça do corpo dourado
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes
Goes ah
When she walks she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes, each one she passes
Goes ah
Oh, but he watchs 'er so sadly
How can he tell her that he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at he
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, he smiles,
But she doesn't see
Oh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at he
Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, he smiles,
But she doesn't see
She just doesn't see
No, she doesn't see
But she just doesn't see
She just doesn't see
No, she just doesn't see
The song “The Girl from Ipanema” is a classic Brazilian bossa nova tune that made waves in the 1960s both in Brazil and internationally. The song was composed by Brazilian singer/songwriter Antônio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes and translated to English by Norman Gimbel. The lyrics describe a beautiful, young girl walking down the streets of Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The singer is infatuated with her beauty and grace, but also laments that she doesn’t even notice him.
The first verse describes the girl’s beauty and grace as she makes her way towards the sea. The second verse speaks of the singer’s loneliness and sadness as he watches her go by. He longs to tell her how he feels and give her his heart, but knows that she doesn't even see him. The third and final verse repeats the image of the girl passing by and the singer’s reaction, but this time emphasizing her obliviousness to his affection. The song ends with a melancholic tone, the singer lamenting his unrequited love for the beautiful girl from Ipanema.

Olha que coisa mais linda
Look at how beautiful she is
Mais cheia de graça
So graceful she moves
É ela menina
She is the girl
Que vem e que passa
Who comes and goes
Num doce balanço
In a sweet swing
A caminho do mar
Heading towards the sea
Moça do corpo dourado
Golden-bodied girl
Do sol de Ipanema
From the sun of Ipanema
O seu balançado é mais que um poema
Her movement is more than poetry
É a coisa mais linda que eu já vi passar
She is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen pass by
Ah, por que estou tão sozinho?
Oh, why am I so lonely?
Ah, por que tudo é tão triste?
Oh, why is everything so sad?
Ah, a beleza que existe
Oh, the beauty that exists
A beleza que não é só minha
The beauty that is not just mine
Que também passa sozinha
That also passes alone
Ah, se ela soubesse
Oh, if she only knew
Que quando ela passa
That when she passes by
O mundo sorrindo se enche de graça
The world fills with grace and smiles
E fica mais lindo
And becomes even more beautiful
Por causa do amor
Because of love
Tall and tan and young and lovely
So tall, tanned, young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
The girl from Ipanema walks along
And when she passes, each one she passes
And everyone she passes by
Goes ah
Goes 'ah'
When she walks she's like a samba
Her walk is like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
So cool and gentle it swings
Oh, but he watches 'er so sadly
But he watches her with so much sadness
How can he tell her that he loves her
How can he express his love for her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
He would give his heart without reservation
But each day when she walks to the sea
But every day when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at he
She looks straight ahead and not at him
And when she passes, he smiles,
And as she passes by, he smiles
But she doesn't see
But she doesn't notice
She just doesn't see
She simply doesn't see
No, she doesn't see
No, she doesn't see
But she just doesn't see
But she just doesn't see
She just doesn't see
She simply doesn't see
No, she just doesn't see
No, she simply doesn't see

My 17 year old daughter was just humming this amazingly beautiful tune. I looked at her and asked if she knew the song. She did not. Well, she does now! And we are dancing around our kitchen listening together. What a wonderful bonding moment. Peace and Love be with us all...
