Working with Muscle Shoals, a pioneering record label, Alexander's "You Better Move On" was the label's first hit and perhaps his best-known song, covered by The Rolling Stones. "Anna (Go to Him)" a US rhythm and blues Top Ten Hit (covered by The Beatles), "Soldier of Love" (covered by The Beatles, Marshall Crenshaw and Pearl Jam) and "Set Me Free" (covered by Esther Phillips and Joe Tex) were also major hits and established Alexander as a pioneering arranger of others' tunes, as well as an established songwriter in his own right. He switched to another label, Sound Stage 7 founded by Fred Foster, and although a 1972 album for Warner Brothers was promising, the singer's potential seemed to wither. He secured a pop hit with "Every Day I Have To Cry" on Buddah Records (1975), but the success remained shortlived. For many years, Alexander was out of the music business; he was a bus driver for much of this time. He began to perform again in 1993 as renewed interest was shown in his small but important catalogue. His last album "Lonely Just Like Me" was his first in 21 years. He signed a new recording/publishing contract in May 1993 but suffered the cruelest fate when he collapsed and died of a heart attack the following month, three days after performing in Nashville with his new band.

Arthur Alexander deserves a special mention in pop and rock history for his particular influence, as indicated, on the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It is believed that John Lennon, in particular, was heavily influenced in his singing style by Arthur Alexander. The above-mentioned tracks such as 'Anna', 'You Better Move On' and 'Soldier of Love', in particular, but maybe also 'Go Home Girl' might confirm this artist's influence on the Beatles and his influence, if the listener needs further convincing after hearing 'You Better Move On', on the Rolling Stones.

As much as I adore the Beatles, I like the original version a lot better. I think its mainly due to the key the songs in. It gives off a much more somber and bittersweet tone. First time hearing this. Love The Beatles' version. I'm impressed by how closely they followed the original, yet made it their own. But it's all there. George Harrison copped the piano hook - sounds very natural on guitar - Ringo based his drum part on the original, and the lads took vocal cues from the background singers. All in all, much more similar than I was expecting. Still love how The Beatles did it, one of my Fab Four faves. But so good to hear this. Thanks!

@roey bronstein He hears "go with him" on the radio at that point and thinks that's the title. Also, Rick Cool says that. The "Go to Him" is also sung at times, just not as many. But the song is Anna. Why it says Go To Him on here I don't know. I didn't write it.

I met Arthur Alexander one time in Nashville, TN. We both got on the elevator at the Exchange Building where radio station W-MAK was located at the time. He was a tall slim guy, very friendly. He was on his way to meet with Noel Ball who worked at the radio station and also was a record producer of sorts. You'll see Noel's name on the 45 of Anna. By the way, Anna was a real girl that broke up with Arthur and he wrote a song about her. Noel Ball also was the producer for The Crescendos who had a big hit with Oh Julie. He also produced for Dale Ward. Dale had a hit record with a song called A Letter From Sherry. It seems Noel was stuck on girl names records. Sadly, all of them have passed on. Dale Ward just a couple of years ago and Noel Ball died many years back as well as Arthur Alexander. Growing up as a teenager in Nashville in the 1960s was an exciting time. A lot of great records came from there.

I´m "in the valley of indecision", as Lennon would say, about this original or The Beatles´cover. Alexander´s deeper, manlier voice gives the singing a warmer and richer texture than the rather teen-sounding Lennon (though both men were only five months apart in age), made even shriller by John´s severe cold on recording day (by the way, what a lesson in professionalism Lennon gives, soldiering on through the whole LP sessions when he should be in bed!). In that respect, Alexander´s version is better, but... Come on, Arthur, your whining, almost sighing silky moaning to your woman, who has turned you into a cuck, is pathetic! If I am the woman and, confronted with the news that I am leaving him despite having had a rather deep relationship (even with "rings" involved), all I get from him is a resigned, sobbing acceptance of defeat, I would immediately despise such a weak crybaby, and I would only get confirmation that I´m OK in cheating and dumping him! What a joke of a man! In that sense, The Beatles´version is better, because Lennon´s adolescent whining is more in line with the "hero´s" immaturity. Quite apart form all that, the musical merits of both versions are extremely good, and it´s rather difficult to say which one is better. The song is no doubt haunting and charming, and that beautiful syncopated rhythm (by both Starkey and the original drummer) is simply extraordinary.
Forgive me if I insist, but .... Imagine a guy saying to the woman who cucked on him: "Every girl I ever have, BREAKS MY HEART and leaves me sad, what am I supposed to do?" Her immediate (and correct) answer would be: "Commit suicide!" This guy doesn´t respect himself, and can´t expect any woman to respect him!

@Javier Gil Vidal U make great points --- unfortunately stories suggest this is a true story -- Alexander's wife "Ann" was cucking him, and they eventually divorced... how bad would that suck? Youre a pop star and u still get disrespected by your "other"... this was an obsession of Lennon's as well -- alot of his songs deal with sexual infidelity and revenge -- most unabashedly, the song "Run for Your Life" or his lyrics suggest HE will steal the woman from someone else ("That Boy" "You're Gonna Lose That Girl" etc)

I love song it was one of my favorites from this beatles album, Listening to the original it just makes you realised how massively influenced the beatles were by black american music, You've only got to listen to a bit of Little Richard to realised how much the beatles sound was influenced and intially a copy of black american music along with american country ,music such as buddy holly. Nothins exist is a vacum. This is a great version , but as already said the beatles gave it a rock pop edge
