1- Like A Stone
Audioslave Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a cobweb afternoon
In a room full of emptiness
By a freeway I confess
I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death
Reading how we'll die alone
And if we're good, we'll lay to rest
Anywhere we want to go

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

On my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to heaven
To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The wine was bled
And there you led me on

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

Alone

And on I read
Until the day was gone
And I sat in regret
Of all the things I've done
For all that I've blessed
And all that I've wronged
In dreams until my death
I will wander on

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

Alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Audioslave's song "Like A Stone" are evocative and introspective. The first verse begins with the singer in a state of confusion and emptiness, lost in the pages of a book that speaks of death and the inevitability of dying alone. The lyrics convey a sense of disconnectedness and a yearning for something that is elusive and hard to describe. The singer confesses this feeling while standing by a freeway, suggesting that he's searching for something that he feels he should have found a long time ago, but hasn't yet.

The second verse continues this theme of yearning and longing, with the singer describing how he longs to be in a particular house, room by room, patiently waiting for someone or something that hasn't yet arrived. This suggests that the singer is searching for a sense of purpose or meaning in his life, and that he's willing to wait for it, even if it takes a long time to arrive. The lines "Like a stone, I'll wait for you there" suggest that the singer has a deep-rooted sense of longing that he can't shake, almost like an unmovable object waiting for something to happen.

The final verse is perhaps the most poignant, with the singer reflecting on his life and coming to terms with all the things that he's done wrong. The line "In dreams until my death, I will wander on" suggests that the singer is searching for something that he knows he might never find, but he continues to wander and search anyway. Overall, the lyrics of "Like A Stone" are haunting and beautifully written, conveying a sense of inner turmoil and a longing for something that is difficult to put into words.

Thank you Bryan.

You know, I've Loved, borrowed and shared these words for several years now.

Please feel free to borrow and share them as well.

These words helped me out so much when I was down.
So I typed it up, printed it on pretty paper and had it laminated.
I passed out over fifty to a hundred copies throughout the years.

I appreciate your kind messages.
Have a great weekend Bryan.

My son suffered from depression, he took his own life 2/4/24. Ever since his death I hear this song in my head, when I wake up, during the day and at night it will pop into my head. I am devastated and will never get over my sons death. I want to wake up from this nightmare but I can’t. I miss my son so much. Rip Brandon my heart is forever broken. To anyone who suffers from depression know that what suicide leaves behind to family and friends is a never ending hell. Stay strong, get help and call a loved one to help you through your pain.
