Their debut album, "Feel It Break" (May 2011, Domino), came after a long sequence of bands for Stelmanis, representing a near ten year musical progression performing as an artist, then fleshed-out by a full band. The album made into several year-end critics' lists; notably, both the Toronto Star and New York named it the best album of 2011, with the former calling it "an outright stunner". Stereogum named Austra a Band to Watch on March 14, 2011.
Their sophomore album "Olympia" was released on June 18, 2013, from which the first single Home was released on March 7, 2013.
In 2014, the band released their first EP, "Habitat EP".
More settled and dominant than ever, the band's sound represents Stelmanis' influences tightened into a shiny metal ball — pianos give way to keyboards as songs build and pull, their urgent, dark melodies arpeggiating through multiple synthesizers, wrapping themselves around Stelmanis' voice.

Austra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
By the weight of the wine
My eye
It yearns
Here comes the guardian of ease
Here comes the carriage of light
Could I feel more?
You'll never know me
I will never know you
Far away
Lies on my eyes
Wake the saint
Shadow of my side
Could I feel more?
You will never know me
I will never know you
So we fall, we falter
In the light, I'm golden
So we fall, we falter
In the light, I am bare
The lyrics of Austra's song "Sleep" depict passion, yearning, and a sense of longing for connection. The song starts with the lines "So, we fall by the weight of the wine, my eye it yearns" which suggests an intoxicating and overwhelming feeling that makes the singer and their lover fall deeply into each other's arms. The next verse introduces a sense of comfort in the form of "the guardian of ease" and "the carriage of light" that come to them, possibly in their dreams. The singer wonders if they could feel more, expressing the desire for deeper intimacy and understanding with their lover.
The chorus repeats the lines "You'll never know me, I will never know you" which signifies their inability to fully understand each other despite their passionate connection. The lines "Far away, lies on my eyes, wake the saint, shadow of my side" add a layer of subtext regarding the past and the singer's inner turmoil. The final verse sees the repetition of the same lines as before, with an added sense of vulnerability as they fall and falter. The last line "In the light, I am bare" reminds the listener of how exposed and raw the singer feels in their love.
