Much of Autechre's music has a strong focus on complex rhythm and driving percussion, and more recently, on meticulous sequencing. Later work has been notably experimental and abstract, in contrast to the more club-friendly and conventional early 1990s releases.
Booth and Brown formed the group in 1987 while they were both living in Rochdale, United Kingdom. They began by making and trading electro and hip-hop mixtapes, but gradually collected some cheap equipment (most notably a Casio SK-1 Sampler) and moved on to their own compositions.

A fable...
Tell me your fable...
Tell me your fable
Tell me your fable...
A fable...
Tell me your fable...
Talk to me, tenderly
We′ll bound together
All win in one feat
Talk to me, tenderly
Show reality fantasy
We'll bound together
All win in one feat
Ooh... Ahh...
Ooh... Ahh...
The fable...
The fable...
Ahh...
The fable...
The fable...
Tell me your fable...
Tell me your fable
A fable
A fable
A fable that will never end
And now, I dream
Dream
Dream
Ooh... Ahh...
Ooh... Ahh...
Doo... Dooh... Ahh...
Doo... Dooh... Ahh...
Ooh... Ahh...
The lyrics of Autechre's "444" invite the listeners to share their personal fable, a story that embodies and represents their own experiences and beliefs. The repeated request to "tell me your fable" indicates a desire for connection and understanding, a wish to bridge the gap between reality and fantasy, and to create a shared space where everyone feels included and validated.
The lines "talk to me, tenderly, show reality fantasy, we'll bound together, all win in one feat" suggest that the act of sharing personal stories can create a sense of unity and empowerment. By sharing their fables, individuals can find common ground with others and form bonds that transcend superficial differences. The song echoes this sentiment through the use of repetitive and hypnotic sounds, which convey a sense of collective trance and shared consciousness.
In the last part of the song, the lyrics shift towards a dreamlike state, suggesting that the process of collective storytelling can lead to a transcendent experience that transcends the limits of the individual psyche. The repeated use of "dream" and the sounds of "ooh" and "ahh" convey a sense of otherworldly wonder and awe. Altogether, "444" can be interpreted as a call for empathy and connection, an invitation to share our most intimate and genuine experiences with others, and to create a sense of belonging that goes beyond the boundaries of the self.
