Burn
Banks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh, ooh
You know that I
I know what's going on
Can't find the time, I won't
Won't end it 'cause it feels like home

Got me caught up in your past
Put your baggage on my back, my love
Though it's heavy I can manage
If you want a ride, piggy back it

I'll take care of you if you want
Make you food, iron your shirt
'Cause I find it's all I know
Make you cocky when you hurt, and you
Maybe we met in a past life
Maybe it worked out right
I can't handle any time
I'll be your candle, watch me burn

Ooh, ooh

You get mad when I
I say I should let go
I know it's not simple
There's no use in looking back in time

When you're living in your mind
And nostalgia holds you in dark places
But I'll be here just in case
You decide you want some help, we can face it

I'll take care of you if you want
Make you food, iron your shirt
'Cause I find it's all I know
Make you cocky when you hurt, and you
Maybe we met in a past life
Maybe it worked out right
I can't handle any time
I'll be your candle, watch me burn

Ooh, maybe, yeah, you
Maybe you
Maybe you, maybe

Do you burn for love?
Do you burn for love?
Do you burn for love?

Maybe we met in a past life (do you burn for love?) (may it burn)
May it burn, let it, may it (past life)

Maybe we met (may it burn)

Maybe we met in a past life (may it burn)
Maybe we met in a past (do you burn for love?)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of BANKS's song "Burn" touch upon themes of commitment, sacrifice, and nostalgia in a relationship. In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that they are aware of the difficulties and challenges present in their relationship but chooses not to end it because it feels like home. This suggests that despite the baggage and complications, the familiarity and comfort of the relationship outweigh the negatives.

The phrase "put your baggage on my back" symbolizes the singer's willingness to support their partner despite their emotional burdens. They are ready to take care of their partner and be there for them, even if it means carrying the weight of their past mistakes or traumas. The lyric "if you want a ride, piggy back it" emphasizes their willingness to help their partner through difficult times.

The second verse explores the struggle of letting go and moving on. The singer acknowledges that their partner gets upset when they suggest letting go of the past. The line "nostalgia holds you in dark places" suggests that their partner may be stuck in a cycle of longing and reminiscing, potentially hindering their ability to move forward. However, the singer remains steadfast, expressing their willingness to assist their partner when they're ready to face their issues and seek help.

The repeated phrase "I'll take care of you if you want, make you food, iron your shirt" illustrates the singer's commitment to their partner and their devotion in looking after their needs. The lyrics also describe the singer's ability to provide emotional support and boost their partner's confidence during difficult times. The line "make you cocky when you hurt" suggests that the singer tries to empower their partner even in moments of pain or vulnerability.

The repetition of the line "maybe we met in a past life" suggests a sense of deep connection and familiarity between the two individuals. It hints at the idea that their bond transcends time and that they have a history together. The mention of burning and candles in the lyrics may symbolize the intensity of their love or the sacrifices the singer is willing to make for the relationship. The line "watch me burn" could imply that the singer is willing to endure whatever challenges or pain may come their way for the sake of their love.

Overall, the lyrics of "Burn" express a sense of dedication, understanding, and support in a relationship, despite the difficulties and complexities that exist. They embody the idea of standing by someone through thick and thin, even when the path forward may be unclear.

I just can't hold my tears while listening this song. As someone who saw his 5 years relationship to be finished very recently, the lyrics remind me how much of myself I gave into it. I wish I still had my mom and grandma so I could hug them. I needed to cry and spill out these engulfed emotions so bad, and for that, I thank you, Banks. Your songs can touch our souls and hearts like no other.

Crying myself 🥲

@moriahosuji7081

This is the most beautiful song I think I've ever heard. I just melt no matter who's around. I want to scream it at the world. This encompasses every bit of the ways I love people. The way we can love people. You out did yourself banks. Just like under the table, but so much more bittersweet this is the anthem for the rest of my life. I listen 5 times in a row 20 times a day wishing every time that it was a little longer. I cry just as hard the millionth time as I did the first time I heard it. This changes the world this gives words to those hurts beyond repair. You are a healer. Thank you. From us all.. thank you babe! We love you this much.
